Any recommendations for outfitters in Europe for red stag? Looking at Austria, Hungary, and Romania. It would be me and the misses, so hunting and exploring. She’s pushing for HUNGARY. We both like off the beaten path and less touristy travel destinations, more culture and local flavor. Any and all recommendations would be welcome! Not looking for record book as a selling point, just wild and open!

Hi Brian. I hunted HuntRomania booked through Tim Herald with WTA and had a great hunt. Also took roe and wild boar on that hunt. Can’t go wrong with Tim Herald, they don’t come any more honest than that And for wild place Romania is The place Hungary is flat and too civilized and frigging expensive to boot " Until the day breaks and the nights shadows flee away " Big ivory for my pillow and 2.5% of Neanderthal DNA flowing thru my veins. I’ve hunted with Marius/Huntromania twice now and plan to again someday soon. I booked direct with Marius—Roe/boar in 2014 and Stag/roe/boar last fall. Both were wonderful trips in a beautiful area with lots of wildlife. There are several very good reviews of Marius’ operation here on AR. Hunting the Austrian Alps can be a Great Experience. Very well managed Free Range Stags, Superb Accommodation and Food etc. Hungary has 100% the World Best Free Range Stags. Very Professional Hunting setup in many Areas. Plenty of Very Good Choices for a Dream Red Stag Hunt. Accommodation and Food are usually very Good too IMO Romania is only something for the Specialist. Some Big Stags are taken every year but density and Quality of Red Stags are in most of the Country low. You have to be VERY Careful when using a Agent, Area, Hunt Operator Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Sure it is wilderness in some parts but proper management should be also done. The Carpathia Mountains are unique for sure ! Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Folks, IMO Romania is the wildest country of them all and it is a beautiful rural country, but not the best country for an opportunity at really big stags. Hunting in the Carpathian mountains is not easy as its very thick. But for sure it is a true wilderness hunt. And yes there are shady operators over there and some of them have advertised on this website as well. Hungary has very good areas for big stags and also other game. Also v. nice accomodations. Trump Jnr. hunts with the operator I work with there and so does many of the European royalty so I can say that you will have access to some of the best areas. Bulgaria, another beautiful country and v. good for big free range red stags. The hunting is not difficult and there are a lot of stags in the right areas. Here are two of my reports from there http://forums.accuratereloadin...821068632#2821068632 http://forums.accuratereloadin...011081642#6011081642 If you are looking for an unforgettable wilderness hunt then consider Kazakhstan for Maral stag, siberian roe deer and mid asian ibex, with an opportunity at boar and wolf as well. I once saw a moose there as well and my local guide told me to let rip, but thank Goodness I didn't! I can attest to the Stags in Bulgeria. You can have as hard to f a climbing hunt as you want or hunt the agricultural areas more like deer. High numbers, but not near as concentrated as in the mountain areas are very dependent on the rut and boar is a good add on in the mountains.I passed a boar not much smaller than my big boar from Austria. If I had planned to hunt boar, he would have been deader than Jimmy Dean Sausage. I have seen one Stag larger than the 9. Kilo Stag I killed in in Bulgeria going with Reddy375. Konstitne, Reddy’s Outfitter, took personal care of me. I need his help with some on the ground logistics once we got in Country, and I am a nobody. The accommodations were very nice. The gyspy towns are a little rough, but in the lodge the accommodations are nice. I had the best meal of my life in Sophia. If your wife needs Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, or Berkin (May your personal God help you if she needs Berkin) go to Austria and Vienna. I love Austria as well. Austria is a little more tame or modern.

Interesting that you compare Austria with Bulgaria. Sure there are almost Zero Gypsys in Austria Austria has a Great hunting Culture. Plenty of First Class Propertys are available. Sadly most of the US Hunters harvest behind the High Fenced Estates Big pen raised Trophys. But this High Fence Operations will be by Law a thing of the past in a few Years. A combination hunt for Free Range Red Stag, Chamois and Alpine ibex in the Alps can be very enjoyable. I highly recommend it to any true Hunter. Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Austria is a great, pleasant country but stag and all game prices are very high. Bulgaria is “different” , been there a few times and many fenced stags released or shot behind wire and claimed as wild. However a country with lots of game species. Not saying this doesn't happen anywhere else either. For me HUNGARY is by the far the winner, super free range hunting, good guides who many speak English, outfits that provide receipts and take bank payments, very safe , good weather, super city of Budapest to look around and sensible prices plus direct flights from most major airports.

Hi, I have hunted almost all European countries and have hunted stags in many of them. To say, one country is better then the other is not very helpful, unless you have some clear criteria. Overall good stags can be hunted in more then a dozens countries around Europe. Just to to give you and idea where I have hunted or had clients hunt red stags: Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Czech, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, France, Belgium, Turkey Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, England & Scotland, Slovakia, Estonia. And I guarantee you there is more. It really comes down to what you are looking for, meaning size, budget, type of hunt etc etc. Marius was mentioned and he a good guy. If you need other options, I am happy to help. Best Regards, Dennis

It is very strange. Both are a step back in time to an US citizen. It is just different. Bulgaria is a fantastic place. Like I said, the best meal of my life was in Sophia at Capt.Cooks which joined a great hotel with a great bar. Actually, my second best meal was in Sophia. Both places everyone I have dealt with moved Heaven and earth. Just stay away from Bulgaria Air. There is not a person over 26 working there, and they are worse than useless which makes the outfitter and agent even more important. Konstitine put me up in a clean hotel on his own dime. He would not let me pay him when we had snafus with my bank and the airline lost my rifle. Good man who was probably happy to see me go. I have hope to hunt England next year.

Do you have proof for releasing Stags into the Wild. Just wonder Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Of course I don’t have proof and aren’t that bored to have proof but if you google it you’ll see some have been bought and released and found out. Plus one area I was at had many hunters in photo albums of stags 12kg+ in an area which was not much apart from pine woods and rocks and majority shot on the first evening from the same tower. Think of that what you will. I will edit this and add I am sure there are many good and like every country you get good and bad.

I think the distillate of all these post are the country one picks is less important than who you go with. All of them have the game you want, all of them can provide the type of hunt you want. Sometimes the weather and game dictate tactics. That is just life. I would have been in a world of hurt without my Austrian Outfitter and Konstantine/Reddy375. Konstantine and Reddy had to go above and beyond. You can read about it in my hunt report. It is just getting to Austria is easier, but my outfitter there has been great. Hunt Romania has a good rep on here. So does Hunt International. My philosophy is Tell people what you want, if there are deal breakers be up front about them, if they can’t deal you shake hands, and enjoy shopping. As for which is best, I hope we get to hunt them all.

In the end the OP was about kulture and wild places off beaten path and that is Eastern Europe HuntInternationl has good point about release of fence animals It’s going on in plenty of places and I know few people quite well in Czech Republic who do that and heard of other places in Eastern Eeurope so beware, listen to all these suggestions, pick reputable agent and have fun " Until the day breaks and the nights shadows flee away " Big ivory for my pillow and 2.5% of Neanderthal DNA flowing thru my veins. That’s what I tried to say but maybe didn’t word it well. We all got a choice where to go and who with and I like Hungary just because of the great amount of animals , food, lodges, Budapest and lake balaton etc , hunting museum to visit. We have good stags here in certain parts of England but few and far between now sadly if your after a 11+ year old stag.

Czech has Thousands of Game Fenced properties. I always wonder where the get that Big Free Range Mouflon Rams over 225CIC. Some are advertised here on AR aswell True Free Range hunts for quality Game is very difficult to find in CZ. On the other side Nippon Sikas are plenty to find in Free Range Western Bohemia Areas nowdays and the are Fun to hunt. Nec Timor Nec Temeritas

Agreed there Bwana You will find free range good quality sika and fallow deer there, red stag not so, muflon it really depends and over 225 ? More then likely only fenced ones, but some of those mining areas in western part have some good over 200 muflon and they are tough to hunt so it gets to be fun. I hunt there often and I simply enjoy free range hunts with good average quality You throw roe deer and pigs into the mix and it’s a blast " Until the day breaks and the nights shadows flee away " Big ivory for my pillow and 2.5% of Neanderthal DNA flowing thru my veins. If you want the biggest possible stag, probably at the highest prices I'd think about Laurentian Wildlife in Quebec. New Zealand and Argentina both have huge stags, with expensive prices and fences. The UK has huge stags with high fences on really small properties. Depending on the outfitter you can pay through the roof or get a good deal. 10kg type stags (315-350 type stags) are easily found in almost all of Mainland Europe. Stags in Spain, Scandanavia and Scotland are smaller but still beautiful. We have good sized stags in America, some over 400 inches of bone. Prices are comparable to high end stags in New Zealand and Argentina. They are on high fence places in Texas and other stags. Some places are very small like the UK. Huge free range stags, eh it gets really hard. Most of the places that have huge stags in Europe are going to have a fence. There are huge stags on Burlburg in Germany and other places that are free range, but cost is equal if not more expensive than New Zealand.

I have hunted with Marius in Romania and shot a nice old stag. I am not really into trophy size. I would hunt Romania again with Marius. But my focus will be wild boar. Does not seem like there is much venison. demand for large red deer stags as the meat is musky. I really like Romania. Good food and people and more friendly than an Hungary. Mike

I am not sure if I am misunderstood or what. I am not saying every piece of land in Europe has 10 kg stags. Most stags shot in mainland Europe are probably 6-8 kg. 10kg is a huge stag in most of Europe in a no fence place. Build a fence and 12-14 kgs becomes more of a sure thing.
