Is there any countries in Europe where owning a gun or hunting is just outright illegal for any reason? Just curious. Thanks.

There are areas of Switzerland with no hunting, but for the most part gun ownership and hunting are parts of life. I don't think you can hunt or own a gun in Malta. We asked about it and were told it was illegal, but we might have asked the wrong people. I have lived in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Spent time in Portugal, Malta, France, Germany, and Britain. Other than Malta I saw evidence of gun ownership and hunting every place I went.

I compete with the Maltese team in shooting competitions regularly so I think gun ownership is definitely possible. If you need to I have email address of at least 02 of their national shooter I can put you in touch with. PM me if needed. There is a selection shoot this weekend in Malta in St. Julian's Bay as I understand ...........

Rifles are Illegal in Cyprus, so there is no legal big game hunting. It has been known for some unsavoury types to poach Mouflon and goats with brenekke's [sp?] FB

What about Turkey? Can you hunt with a rifle there or is it Shotguns only? Seem to remember a recent article where Boddington hunted Ibex with a scoped shotgun shooting slugs? Can't remember where it was, but Turkey rings a bell.. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

No you can hunt in turkey. I think they have very strikt gunlaws. Ibex with slugs is on an island in greece, i think.

The Swiss canton of Geneva outlawed hunting some years back - not exactly sure when... As Geneva is a very urban canton, I suspect this had something to do with urban values and a bleeding hearts attitude towards furry little creatures. Now, instead of having hunters control their game populations, the Genevans pay public employees (with no qualifications similar to that required to become a hunter) to do so - primarily by lamping at night... Go figure... I have never lived in Geneva, so I don't know the details about gun ownership 100%. I do know hunters from Geneva (hunting elsewhere), and they still own guns, so I guess gun ownership is largely organized as it is in the remainder of Switzerland - which used to be one of the more liberal countries in Europe, gun-wise. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... When I lived in Turkey, my leather goods guy owned a Sauer 90 in 7mm Remington Magnum. The biggest downside was that he couldn't buy more than 100 rounds of ammo per year.

There is hunting in Turkey including Boar and other animals. I have a contact offering guided hunts from Antalya. I'm not sure about the licensing conditions or whether its possible to take your own rifles. There are severalvery active Turkish hunting groups on facebook. PM me if you wantlinks I'm in Bulgaria at the moment. There is hunting here but I understand that you need a ticket for each beast you shoot. Crazy from my perspective, the resteraunts in Bansko are offering roasted rabbit for 300 lev (about £150). I don't think they believed me when I told them I had a job to give them away after shooting them in England.
