Been reading some reports on Mouflon. I thought they were a mountain animal found in similar places to ibex and chamois, albeit not quite so steep.

But most of what I have read on reports they seem be in forested areas or large heathland, wetland or grassland or farmland type places - more akin to say red deer or wild boar.

They undoubtedly make a good trophy, but what is the hunting like, as to my mind the trophy and shot is a very small part of whole experience. I would much rather spend a few days in a wild beautiful place and shoot nothing, than be sat in a high seat with game driven to me.

I have hunted them in the alps in pretty much the same habitat as chamois, I would personally only ever hunt mouflon in the mountains. I have also seen red stag in the alps in places where goats would struggle!

Depends on where you hunt them. In Poland you will more or less find the moufflon in the woods or up against the timberline. Same in Hungary, but in Croatia and Austria you will find them in more mountainious areas and high grass slopes like the chamois etc.

Would you like challenging hunt for Mouflon!

So Croatia is definitely a good place to start, along the Adriatic coast between the town of Senj and Jablanac.
From the coast and a few miles into the country is a great area for Mouflon, staying here from about 0 to 600 meters above sea level, and the area can give the hunter some wonderful challenges.

Try searching for "Jablanac Mouflon" and see the pictures from Google.

Video from the area

Thanks gentlemen - that would be fun country to hunt in. assuming that its late autumn when you are hunting. What sort of ranges re most shots - 200 yds or so. And in that video that ram certainly ran a good way - are most like that. What sort of money are you talking to go hunting in Croatia?

The prices I can not remember (it's not the cheapest, but they're pro), so you must obtain a quote.
Shot distance may you expect in the range 170 yds - 330 yds.

Moufflon like sheeps should have their hooves constantly worn or they'll get maimed. That's why they prefer rocky terrain, ie mountain.
They originated from Corsica where snow isn't plentiful or durable. It results that in the Alps they suffer a lot during winter. If they can they resort to forest in winter.

Range of shooting : moufflon can spot a hunter from 2-3 kilometers. Should they be seriously hunted, they are very very on the eye, not letting you approach closer than +/- 600m.
At that wolves make them even more suspicious.

Most of the moufflons that I shot where at the 200-300 m range.
Last year I did my best to approach them at 400 m, in vain. French alps and wolf country.

I'll second JB. In Belgium, we also have a limited (Corsican) mouflon population. They adapt to most habitats, as long as the terrain is rocky. I heard of some privately owned and fenced animals whose hooves did rot from living on grassland.

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

In Czech republic in NW, they live in open pit coal mines , reclaimed ones and currently working ones.
Quite the challenging hunt
