1894,

I seem to recall a 6.5x57mm being advertised for a sale in the back of Stalking Magazine some time back and I always assumed it was Ken's, although I have no idea that it is correct or not???

In it's factory form from the figures I have seen published, I agree there is no balistic difference between the x55 and the x57. Having said that, I believe an AI loaded to its full potential in a modern action would offer a significant velocity gains over a factory 6.5 x55 load.

I say this because of the improvement you see when the .257 Roberts is given the AI treatment...the AI version of this is not far behind the .25-06 performance wise...

Of course whether this is all worth it for deer stalking as the Swede works so well is another issue; I simply offered the suggestion as Andy was looking for something a bit different...

Regards,

Pete

A FRIEND USES A MANNLICHER IN 6,5 X 57 AND SHOOTS GREAT. IT IS REALLY ACURATE AND I HAVE SEEN ONE SHOT KILLS UP TO 350 M.

I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH THE 6,5-284, BUT I HAVE JUST READ IN THE FORUMS IT MAY BE A BARREL EATER BECAUSE OF HIGH SPEEDS.

I would think the 6.5x68 would leave a 6.5/.284 for dead.

It is also a factory round and not a wildcat.

It used to be available in Mauser rifles, plus Sauer, Blaser etc plus breakopen singles often in the 6.5x68R form.

It is the equivalent to the .264 Win Magnum which it preceded by many years.

6,5-284 Norma is not a wildcat anymore. Norma C.I.P approved it and made it factory cartridge.

The 6,5X68 is a hot rock, but most rifles has a twist that will not handle 140 grain bullets.

Ther is also the wildcat 6,5X63 Messner. http://www.calibres-messner.com/

Cheers

I had the pleasure of shooting next to arguably the finest long-range rifleman the United States has produced in the last 10-20 years David Tubbs (7 time national high-power champ etc.). At the time he was using a Tubbs 2000 in 6.5x284. He proceded to spank everyone at this match and went on to set a new national record and another championship -this game shoots to 550meters. I would think if any target shooting is in the plans this is the round to go with. Tubbs has since gone to a 6x .243 caliber for lower recoil but it wouldn't be as good for hunting.............DJ

What is a 6x .243?

The 6XC (not 6x) is a shortened 243 made by fireforming a 22-250 case necked to 6mm. They use a 243 chamber reamer and just stop .132" short. The goal was to shoot 107gr Sierra Matchkings at 2950fps.
You might enjoy his book "The Rifle Shooter" by David Tubb it has a lot more details about different competitive cartriges. I think he talks a bit much about his Tubb2000 Rifle but a lot of his approaches to shooting would be invaluable to any competitive shooting discipline. He's also a very nice guy............DJ

6.5 X 284 is outstanding! 6.5X.257 Roberts and 6.5X57 are good. .264 WM is tops, but that is another story.
