Some pictures from a lucky weekend hunting moose and red deer.

Me and two friends went out on Friday to try for red deer. We have still four animals on quota and were eager to make an attempt. We saw two but didn't fill any tags.

After a couple of hours a decent bull moose made it's entry in front of me.
To make sure I could shoot it I had to take a couple of phone calls to other parts of the team. The moose was very patient with me and after 5 min I had the cross hairs on him. At 266 meters I hit him at the top of the heart. He took five steps and fell over.

When I got down to him I started to wonder. He didn't have any antlers on... Confused
I must say I was reliefed when I found them some meters apart and apart from the bull itself. Later examination discovered an old wound. The bull was suffering from an infection. He was in bad shape and would might have had problems getting through the winter.

Here he is...

On Saturday we went out in search of more moose. My buddy Geir, who's attending the Febr. hunt in Suffolk btw, shot this cow..

And on Sunday I was lucky once again, shooting this young cow.

The weather was really far from perfect, but it was all worth it!! Smiler

Congratulation Anders thumb

The first bull looks a bit "weird" with what seems like curly hair along the ridge of his back?

Anyway...plenty good eating Smiler

Cell Phone connection? I figured you'd be out in the wilderness; not in your backyard. Or were those phone calls to the Predator Control Center?

Also a good story about the antler. I normally think of something creative when I whack one in the head, too; despite aiming for the chest. Don't sweat the broken antler - that's why Hot Glue was invented.

Nice one - looks cold!

Would be interested to hear more about the carcass extraction. Do you butcher yourselves or sell to a dealer 'in the jacket'?

Thanks guys! It was an interesting weekend for sure.. Smiler

It looks weird on the picture, Arild, but the hair wasn't actually curly. But the bull was in pretty bad condition, and you can see the structure of bones on it's back..

Gerry, Gerry, Gerry... Smiler I knew it had to come from somebody, and it was no shock it was from you.. Big Grin Big Grin

We are allowed to use motorized vehicles to get meat from moose and red deer out of the woods. Normally we use ATV or tractor, depending on the terrain. We take it to a "larder", where we skin and cut them in half. Each hunter get's it's share during the hunt. Some deliver to a butcher and get the finished result right back. Others do the work themselves..

This is in Norway yes. In the county of Telemark. In Norway around 40 000 moose is shot each year. Last year the total number of red deer exceeded this number for the first time..

We still have three calves and and four red deer to shoot, so the hunt is far from over! Smiler

Thanks again for your interest, guys!

Anders,

Eeker Me?

Buddy.....a great report and good supporting photos, too.

Please let us know how the remainder of your tags work out? 3 Calves & 4 Red Deer - ought to be interesting.

Your Bullwinkle does appear gaunt in the photo - as the Germans say; a "Hegeabschuß" or Conservation (Mercy) Harvest - you put that poor ole Bull outs his misery - Well Done! I agree with you, in his condition he would surely not have survived until Spring (most probably not even Christmas).

I'll be bringing some smokes with me this year in Suffolk - paybacks for all the mooching I did last year!

Haven't had time to post these pictures until now.. I went out for some more moose hunting a couple of days later. I went with some other folks in another area. They had three animals on quota and had seen lots of tracks lately, and our hopes were high..

After an hour of waiting I heard the dogs bark in a valley underneath me. The dog handler informed it was a cow with two calfes. But unfortunatly she took out in another direction than towards me.

Out of nowhere another cow came strolling towards me. Following here was a small spiked bull. Both were shootable, but we didn't want to shoot a big cow. Preferably a young one. I wasn't totally sure about the cow, so I aimed for the small bull. He went down in his tracks from a quartering towards me shot at 80 meters. The cow took of into the woods were she came from, but she actually gave me a couple of oppurtunities for a shot. I still wasn't sure about her size, so I held my shots back. I talked to the others on the radio. Told them I wasn't sure, but that she looked quite small. It's a difficult task to judge a big cow from a small. At least for me.

If the cow looked small I should shoot her, they said. A little late, I thought. Just as that thought was going through my head she came back.. At 50 meters she stopped. I had my crosshairs on her.. She's not that big, I thought to myself, as a put more pressure on the trigger. Boom!
She travelled some 40 meters before piling up from a heart shot..
Upon seeing here she wasn't big. She wasn't very small either. I had made an ok decision after all.. Smiler

Here's the spiked bull. Unfortunatly my camera went out of batteries, so no pics of the cow.
You must decide for yourself if you believe me or not.. Big Grin
