Chirping is quite a good description. I always thought of it like low level goat bleats. Only in a park herd, when one can get in fairly close to a large group of does and fawns have I heard this deer talk. I believe it to be the doe checking and reassuring her fawn who is making the bleating. When you get too close to a large group there is alot of bleating before they move away; I assume thats mum instructing youngster to look sharp and make tracks.

I was out tonight watching a group of does and young stuff at last light. I was around 150m away from the deer downwind, they were relaxed and would chase each other in a playful manner. The strange thing is, that I could hear them making some kind of noise, like a chirp, the kind of thing you would expect from a chick(bird). I heard it more than once, and it happened while they were chasing. Unfortunately I cant say whether it was mothers calling young or anything else because it was too dark by then to be able to accurately make out who was who. Has anyone ever observed this kind of behaviour?

Express, I was out watching the rut on Sunday morning and I heard a similar sound...it was kind of like a roe doe squeak, but "different"...There was a buck that was having trouble keeping his does rounded up, and I heard this "squeak" comming from the does as they ran away... I don't do much with fallow at all so I have no idea if this is common or not. It does make me wonder if its not worth trying to re tune a buttalo (sp?) and give it ago? Regards, Pete
