Is anyone still making hunting clothing out of Ventile cloth? Barbour used to make a loden green jacket with liner and hood that seemed Ideal but no longer have it on their production list. I have an insulated Loden jacket that is waterproof and quiet but would like a longer coat style with a hood........DJ

DJ, Yes, you can get Ventile clothes in the UK but I don't recall the company's who do it right now. Out of interest, take a look around the Kammo site I post the link for above and look at the specs for the cotton they use in the shell. It is certified as being more waterproof than ventile...they may even make you a jacket of just the shell if you asked... Another very lightweight alternative is to do a search on "SAS smock UK"...These are a hooded windproof cotton smocks which are very light weight, but not very waterproof. Usually they are in DPM, but there are good copies being made in plain green as well. They are good bits of kit, but might look a bit "military" for what you want. Regards, Pete

DJ, Here is a typical copy of the original SAS smock: Its made by a company called SASS (corny play on the abbreviation!): http://www.sasskit.co.uk/ Their is actually quite good and I have used a similar smock and liked it very much. In cold wet weather, I wore it over a short fibre pile and pertex jacket, and although neither bits of kit were supposedly waterproof, it took a very heavy prolonged downpour to soak through them both... For the ventile clothing try: http://www.countryinnovation.co.uk/index.htm They are actually made for birdwatchers so don't get too graphic about what you want it for! Hilltrek up in Scotland also do ventile and that is aimed squarely at the field sports market... http://www.hilltrek.co.uk/hilltrek/country_ventile.htm Regards, Pete
