Hi Guys,

It is that time of year again to think about our annual get together.

We have a couple of options available so all thoughts are welcome.

First, we can go back to Ampton on a similar type package to last year. If they allow it, which should be fine, we will do the catering ourselves in house (courtesy of Adam Smiler ) and this should cut the price per person down by about £50. so subject to confirmation we are looking at about £530 for that option.

Secondly we can go to Scotland in early Feb and hunt Roe Does, Red Hinds, and Goats. The cull number will be significantly smaller but it is an option to do something different and there will be a limited number of trophy goats available either side of the hunt. Cost there will be about £480 B&B so dinners will be taken in the pub at your cost. no TF's on roe does, £75 on red hinds. Goats will available outside of the cull weekend at a day rate for the hill guide and trophy fee on big billies.

Lastly we can go out later in the year and do the same as the above to shoot some roe bucks in April/May, at £480 plus trophy fees on the bucks of £40.

All thoughts welcome.

Rgds,
Kiri

Hello Kiri,

I would like to join you guys on the next trip. I think gerac will join, too.

All three options sound like fun.
If I would have to choose I would vote for the roe buck hunt!

Cheers

Dennis

Hey Kiri,

like Dennis said, I would join. Hunting Muntjacs was real fun, especially since you could shoot that many Big Grin

Roe bucks sound fun. Another round of Muntjac hunting would also work.

Hendrik

I participate with pleasure Smiler

Scotland first priority, to make a little renewing.

Ampton, a nice place, but second priority.

and an extra turn after roebuck end of April, beginning May.

Kiri, I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm in for Ampton and or Roe Buck later in the spring.

Really regret not going this year. Now only Gerry has perfect attendance.

Much as I like shooting Muntjac, I think a long weekend in the Scottish hills would make a pretty special AR Euro Forum group hunt.

The ground we are planning to use is spectacular, with broad-leaf and rhododendron wooded valleys on the low ground, going up to 2,500ft+ of tough open hill country on the higher ground (with the added bonus that, in February, it will also have the horizontal rain, freezing temperatures and waterlogged bogs that those of us that stalk north of the border know and love...).

The people who book earliest can have the luxury heated high seats overlooking the best deer meadows clap

Adam.

Guys,

We will go ahead and do the roe hunt too for those that fancy a summer get together. I am heading up to the ground on Wednesday next week so we can get an idea of the scope and put something together on my return.

Bill, I replied this evening. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Which part of Scotland are you talking about - my experience of scottish mountains in Feb is more like vertical sleet / wet snow. The vertical bit is not the gentle fluffy stuff coming down from above, more like being shot blasted as it comes in on the howling gale from below.

But if you get a spell of fine weather Scottish mountains in the winter are spectacular.

We're talking about the scenic Galloway Hills, in sub-tropical south west Scotland, where the sun always shines and the temperature rarely drops below 18 degrees Celsius...other than the occasion earlier this year when I went to bed after stalking nearby, thinking there was a frost on the way, and woke up in an arctic blizzard with the van at the bottom of 10' snow drift.

Not like bleeding awful Argyll in January 2011, where it was -20 and we had to pee on the FC padlocks to defrost them enough to unlock them, then my knees actually froze to the ground while I was gralloching a Roe deer.

The argument on the way out of the forest as interesting - each time we got to a locked barrier, it was "I'm sure YOU pissed on this one, so I'm not touching it..."

The upshot of all this is that Brian's now coming to hunt Muntjac in Suffolk in October, while the sun's still shining and before the squirrels hibernate beer

The Irish delegation will be there in force, be careful what you wish for....

We are not totally pathetic, but if you could arrange an Indian summer for that weekend, we would be very grateful.

There's an alternative?

Was actually thinking of bringing the Blaser with the 222 pipe fitted, not sure.

I really need to get a rifle for the small stuff, 243?

In all seriousness, if you're just going to shoot Muntjac, just bring the .222 and head-shoot everything - the ranges are sub-100 yards from most of the woodland seats. As I'll be manning the larder, it will make a nice change for me to gralloch Muntjac there that haven't been detonated amidships with muzzle-braked .300RUMs or .270WSMs.

Some of the deer in February looked like they'd stumbled through a minefield, then been strafed with a chain gun...at least when Kiri uses the .260 Ladyshave, he has the decency to shoot their heads off.

If you're going to shoot Roe bucks too, bring the .243.

Adam.

Adam & Kiri,

If you'll have The Winkelmeister & myself again we'd like to attend; Dolan-Bob has declined and George Clooney has been transfered to the States.

Winkelmeister wants to bring his 257 Weatherby Magnum again and instead of the K95 Luxus Stutzen in 7x57R; I'd like a Permit for my R93 Muzzle Braked 300 Weatherby Magnum.

See if we can keep Adam busy in the Larder; I suggest a Bio Hazzard suit.

Gerry,

Sadly the .300 Weatherby Magnum was withdrawn from use in the UK under the same legislation that saw the withdrawal of US cruise missiles from from Greenham Common and for causing coastal erosion in Norfolk when fired in Suffolk...

Kiri's found you some cheap Cyriot army surplus Claymores to use at Ampton, on the grounds that these will cause less tissue damage than the .300 Blitzkrieg.

Adam,

O.K., we're in if you'll have us.

I'll take a stroll through some Women's Underthings Shops (incognito) and see if I can manage to find something that Fits the Bill along the Bodyform line; in the appropriate color; ugh, colour of course.

A Muntjac FDP (Final Defensive Perimeter); has potential.

The dates of the AR European Hunting Forum annual Muntjac culling weekend will be 14th - 16th February 2014 at Ampton in Suffolk. Thecost, including 12 cull muntjac females, all meals and accommodation is £560.

Accommodation will be in shared rooms at Livermere Hall on Friday and Saturday night and will include dinner on Friday night, breakfast, sandwich lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

Arrival time is approximately 12 noon on Friday and departure time will be around 12 noon on Sunday.

The hunting will consist of four outings - Fiday PM, Saturday AM, Saturday PM and Sunday AM - to shoot Muntjac deer from high-seats around the estate. For morning outings we expect to be in seats by 05:30hrs until around 09:30hrs and in the evenings from around 17:00hrs until dark.

The cost of the weekend includes 3 Muntjac females per outing (12 per weekend).

Additional Muntjac does are £45 each.

All Muntjac bucks with ivory showing are £100 - there are some very good medal class bucks around, so be selective and you'll get a cheap trophy.

If numbers are still high, Roe females may be available too - prices to be confirmed. There is always the chance of a decent Red stag appearing on various parts of the Estate - these can be shot amd the trophy fee is £350.

The nearest airport is London Stanstead and we can usually arrange a free or cheap pick up and drop off if another member of the party is arriving and departing via the M11. Pick ups and drop offs via London Heathrow are do-able at additional cost.

Muntjac are small deer, so any rifle from .222 upwards is suitable for shooting them (subject to UK deer legislation regarding energy and speed).

Moderators / Suppressors are legal for hunting use in the UK.

Non-UK hunters will need a UK Visitor Firearms Permit to bring firearms into the UK. I can organise these for you and mail them to you in advance at a cost of £35 per person. With this document, bringing firearms and ammunition into the UK is straightforward.

I think that's all the details - it's always a great weekend with a lot of good humoured leg pulling, plus we usually cull in the region of 60-80 Muntjac too.

Regards,

Adam.

Hi Adam,

It's looking like I will not be able to make the hunt, I'm still holding out a little hope. I have a couple of situations that are taking longer than I figured to take care of, nothing bad except that they are keeping me from hunting.

Hope you and Kiri are doing well.

Hi David,

Even if you make a decision to come at short notice, we'll make a space for you somewhere - there's some unfinished business with a monster Muntjac buck with your name on it in the Folly wood Wink

I promise not to make you walk through the sugar beet too...

All the best,
