Can anyone give me some background info on this cartridge? I am assuming that it was designed by Scheiring of Ferlach, Austria, and that it is a 5.6x50R case necked up to 6mm (please correct me if I am wrong). Any info would be appreciated.

Hi 9.3 rifleman,

you are right - this is the 5,6x50R necked up to .243 inch (6,2 mm) bullets and slightly shortend to avoid accidential loading in a 5,6x50R gun.

The idea was to get rid of the negative side effects of the 5,6x50(R) - meat destruction due to high bullet velocity - and still to have a rimmed cartridge for the combination guns which are still quite popular in Germany and Austria. The .243 Win is not a good idea for these kind of guns.

BTW: Scheiring also developed a second cartridge - the 8,5x75R, which is the 9,3x74R necked down to .338.

As you can see - he is quite an innovative gunsmith - keeping with the austrian traditions on one side and open for innovation on the other side. His gorgeous single shot rifles in 7mm STW or .300 Pegasus are perfect examples. The only issue is the price tag .

The idea of the 6x50R is creating an caliber special made for roe deer, having less meat distruction than the 5,6x50R For the minimum caliber for all other amimals in Germany is 6,5 mm.

We have a number of new rimmed 6mms here:

- 6x50R Scheiring
- 6x52R Bretschneider
- 6x70R

IMHO, all these are superfluous re-inventions of the wheel.

i am not sure if the 6x50R Scheiring made it to the CIP (=european SAAMI equivalent) list already. No factory ammunition in sight.

Both. Commercial reloaders offer it, but there exists no ammunition from any major manufacturer.

The 8.5x75R or ".338x74R" was created by Elmer Keith.
Necking up the 5.6x50 and 5.6x50R was done by several people (e.g. W. Reb, A. Atzl, ...).

IMO, the 6x50R and 6x52R come close to the "ideal" roe deer cartridge.
Only trouble is that Germans do not need a dedicated roe cartridge anymore, due to the abundance of wild boar.

Superfluous?? Who cares, any cartridge is fun. And there are plenty that make less sense.

I have a 5.6x50R in a K95 which is fantastic. Unfortunately I am only allowed to use it on roe in Scotland and not England. A 6x50R scheiring would be perfection for much of my roe stalking but unfortunately despite being CIPd Blaser will not chamber it.

I may explore a custom barrel but the expense is likely to be prohibitive.
