Hi Off on safari soon to SA and am wanting to shoot a trophy Impala and Springbuck. Has anyone had any experience of the what its like to have them imported back to the UK? Is it as prohibitively expensive as I have been told? Are there any major problems to be expected / or do's / don'ts that i should be aware of?

I just had 2 Buff heads and capes shipped and the price was around £1300. It pays to shop around with the various air freight people but it shouldn't be too hard. Ed

Paul, Its probably on par with burning money! You will get a quote for the costs, but somehow the final invoice will always be considerable more.. There are quite a few hidden extra's like clearing agents and import taxes or vat when they arrive in London to name just a couple... They only good thing is that much of these additional costs will probably 12 to 18 months after your trip has finished, depending how long the taxidermist takes in RSA.. Regards, Pete

I think for a trophy safarin to RSA you can expect to pay 50% of your safari cost again in taxidermy shipping and clearance. That is assuming you shoot 5-6 animals of varying sizes that get shouldermounted. Skull mounts will be cheaper. Rgds, FB

my esperience, on shipping of a kudu, a impala and a springbock (only horns and skullplates, not animals I have shoot but some of these culling animals,) from RSA a pair of year ago is about 100USD shipping cost.a price for the shippments of a cape buffalo trophy and others trophy if i remembre correctly was 5 USD/lbs. But this is only my experience, and not from a safari but simple from buyng online some horns. D.V.M.
