Yesterday during a pheasant hunt unfortunately we met a wild boar in thick reed. The boar attacked our dogs (german pointers) and cut one of them up badly! Our four legged friend died just minutes later. I changed the shells for slugs and went into the reed. Contacted the wildboar shortly and killed him from short distance (about two paces) with a fast double. It was a 5 years old male with about 150 kg weight. Both side of his full with old and fresh scars from fight. Tusks 20 cm. R.I.P. Dongó!! Regards: Andy

That is a big old boar! Sorry to hear about your dog - you'd think on the face of it that a dog would be quicker on its feet than a boar - just goes to show.

Thanks Kuwinda! The problem was the reed. It is so thick that the dogs cant moove that fast like this tank-like built wildboars. Regards: Andy

Andy my condolences. I've been there, done that. Back in 2001 I was following a wounded big boar, hit in the sternum with .243 Win (guy was waiting for saw with piglets and couldn't hold off when big guy came)shot the previous night. Boar waited for me after 1.5 km under a pine with its branches all the way down to the ground - it got us both in 2 strides - dog was cut open across the ribs, I was knocked over...lucky I guess - can't say that about the dog. She managed to drag away for 15m and died in a minute or so. I have never blamed it on the boar tho - he was fighting for his live and gave his best. Looking back and trying to figure out what could be done to change the outcome I can't see anything to prevent it - it was meant to be. As for my dog - it was bred and raised for work at highest stakes - it was a "good death".

Sorry about your pup. I was stalking with my bow early one morning when I heard a fight break out. I closed on them fast. There were 2 boars about 200 lbs. each. They were in the middle of a group of sows and piglets. As I watched them fight in the waist high grass, I was amazed at how fast the can move. They can spin 180 to face there opponent in a split second. I killed one with a arrow thru both lungs a few minutes later. I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Thanks for all of you! Things like this happens sometimes. Unfortunately now it was no happy end. But it could be much worst. If one of us met immediately that boar in the reed... Regards: Andy
