Although not my prefered type of boot, if anybody is looking for a traditional African "veldskooen" style boot, I've just come across the ones below from bison bushcraft

They are made in the UK ,with unlined leather uppers and a thin vibram sole and are priced at £90..

I've not handled any so can't comment on the quality first hand, but have read a couple of favourable reviews.

Hi Pete

You can buy South African Vellies at http://www.unbeatentracks.com for £45 and they have a really good sole on them. All their clothing is Africa proof as well (no ironing accidents).

Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

Pete,
2 years ago I belived that shoes like these can be a good choice, I changed my opinion after I hunted in Namibian Khomas Area. The round rocks of the hills are one of the worst terrain for walking and a more tight and hight ankle support is welcome. Taking in consideration that a pair of shoes weight from 1 to two ore more kgs on the check-in scale, I'll use light trekking boots made by Zamberlan that I already used for hunting, leaving home a pair of african shoes. They are comfortable but, probably, dedicated to different terrains.

Maybe when I'll go in a different area or country my opinion will change.

bye

Steve,

I totally agree with you and if you look at previous boot threads I have said the same thing..

However, I am aware not everybody feels the same way, so I simply posted the link out of interest.

Mark,

Thanks for that link; i will have a snoop around there shortlty!

Regards,

Pete

I have been extremely happy with my pair of Russell Mbogo's for safari walking. Expensive but IMO well worth it.

I'm off to SA (1st time) with Puntgunner & Millwall et al next month and was just going to take my old Salamon lightweight trekking boots. Do you think it would be a good idea to take another "backup" pair or a set of these Veldskooen Vellies? (Although they look pretty rough for my delicate footsies).

Lightweight ankle length hiking boots sounds like the the most sensible option to me ... but then again I've never been to Africa before...
