Folks

It's going to happen again! Smiler

We have arranged for AR members to have another meet 'n hunt over the weekend of 21st & 22nd of February 2009.

The format that proved so successful last year will be repeated - though any suggestions for improvement are very welcome.

Some have asked whether non AR members can attend. After consideration, it has been decided to limit attendance to those with more than 50 posts or AR members who have been registered in excess of a year. You require an 'open' FAC if you are UK based, however, all shooters will have to fire a group of less than 3" at 100yds to prove ability and sight adjustment. No group, no shooting - no exceptions! Smiler

We will get together before luchtime on the Friday, check rifles are zeroed and grouping is satisfactory. Out for the first hunt by about 3pm - hopefully successfully - before a social meal. Hunting again on the Saturday morning and afternoon - as well as a final outing on the Sunday morning. Catering by Fallow Buck enterprises - with compact and bijou accomodation being offered by the local Travelodge. For those who prefer, there are free bunkhouse facilities offered by the hunt club. Costs will be confirmed - but will include meals and all cull animals.

Please register your interest by PM to Fallow Buck - places are limited and interest is going to be high!

Further detailed information and programme will be posted as they are confirmed.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Rgds IanF

Could those in the know (either from experience from last year, or because they are familiar with the estate's rules) spread some light on this shooting precondition, please??

quote:
all shooters will have to fire a group of less than 3" at 100yds to prove ability and sight adjustment. No group, no shooting - no exceptions!

To that end,

1) what constitutes a "group" - 3 shots??

2) does the 3" max group size refer to distance from 100 yds (absolute) zero?? I.e. all shots have to be within 3" of the bullseye (sp?) at 100 yds??

3) Or does it just mean that the group size can't be larger than 3" regardless of where you have chosen to sight in your rifle?? I normally sight in my rifle 4cm high at 100m, so would expect my group centre to be 4 cm away from the bullseye. So is it group size or distance from absolute zero which is the deciding factor??

4) what is the target we are shooting at?? Does it have an identifiable bullseye (e.g. white/black/orange dot)?? Or is it a "game" target with no immediately identifiable bullseye (from a distance). Like this one:

5) what is the high seat like where we have to shoot from?? I take it the seat has a natural a "front rest" (wooden bar?) for the gun, but does it have rests for your elbow as well (right or left)?? How rickety is the high seat?? Or is it a solid shooting platform??

Thanks very much for your time in advance.

- mike

Mike, I am sure our Rangemaster (IanF) will reply but this year it was a simple measure of group size (75mm overall diameter). I would not zero too high at 100m 2-3cm at most.

The highseats I sat in in Baldock were excellent with a metal rail all around which for me (6ft / 1.8m Tall) was perfect, both for your left hand / forend and the right elbow was rested also. Damn near as good as a benchrest.

The high seat we shot our test groups out off was a different matter. I found the rail quite low and struggled to shoot the required 3" group.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Thanks Brian. Was a second attempt at shooting the group allowed, or was it a once-only proposition??

Mike, I managed the 3" group - only just - at the first attempt.

I hope Ian would have given me another crack at it if needed (??), thankfully it wasn't required.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this - but failing at the 100yd grouping practice, meant you had to hold the next shooters target while he shot his three rounds! Smiler stir

To clarify.

The hunting club which hosts us would usually insist on each shooter being accompanied in the high seat. As a special dispensation, they agreed that if you can show accurate, consistent shooting prior to the hunt, you will be allowed to hunt on your own. This requirement thus allows us to operate the hunt with a minimum of staff, and maximum confidence in the hunters abilities.

If the shooting point is subject to high winds (as it was last time), then of course we will take that into consideration. However, I would hope that you are confident of your ability to place a rested shot into a 7.6cm circle at 100yds. The target is the centre of a white A4 sheet with a hollow square black aiming point. VERY clear aiming point for any type of optical sights. We are interested in group size - and the fact that you KNOW where it is relative to the point of aim.

To put this into perspective, non of the hunters failed to achieve the required standard. I did ask one person to shoot again - but only because his lovely 2cm group was not relative to the aiming point in the centre of the target. He shot again, aiming at the required point .... and slipped them into just over a cm!

If you would like a link to the target we use, just ask and I will get it PM'd over for you to play.

This is a good idea, concentrates peoples minds no end... Over here, traditionally failed shooters have had to wear apples on their heads for the next round of shooting... It is a good Swiss tradition... hillbilly

P.S I also found an old post about last years event, and it transpired the target was shot @ 100 m (as opposed to 100 yds).

Folks

As expected, the interest has been very keen! We only have three or four places left for this event. If you are considering attending, I would strongly advise checking your diary and confirming soonest.

A number of our party had some fairly heavy driving to get to another site during the last event. That location will not be used again for the 2009 bash.

The dates are confirmed and if you care to book your accomodation, it is currently available at £29 per night.

Hi guys,

Can we just hold off booking accomodation yet until we have everything 100% solid. I appreciate that you are all looking forward to this , (as are we) but given the non refundable nature of the accomodation we would like that nothing unexpected happens to cause loss of funds.

As I understand it we are yet to confirm costs and places for the weekend and some other similarly minor details... Wink

Thanks
Kiri

Man, that travelodge website is a pain in the posterior!

If one wants a room for 3 nights, and the prices per night are listed at 29, 29 and 39 respectively. You attempt to make a booking for all 3 nights - and the website sets the price to be 3x39!! Mad

So the answer seemed to be to make two separate bookings - in which case you get hit with 2 separate credit card fees... Mad

Anyway, booking completed. Roll Eyes

Hi Guys,

I will e away next week but we shoud have some costs for you in about a fortnight. Thisa isn't so Ian and I can work out how muich we can take you for... Wink more that there are a couple of additional things we would like to do this year.

Mainly we are looking into getting someone in to deal with or help with the mainstay of the gralloching and larder work. There are also a couple of other bits that need to be looked into in order to try and raise the bar yet again.

Best regards,
FB

BTW Guys,

For your information, it looks like we are down to the last space already before we get onto reserve spaces.

Also could anyone sending PM's with questions regarding the weekend put both Ian and myself on the same message please as it make it easier to keep track of everything. Once everything is sorted out we will get a group thread going that everyone can share their questions on, or we'll make the thread a sticky on the main forum.

It looks like we're cooking on gas now and I'm already looking forward to meeting some new faces as well as getting reqaquainted with some old, (gnarly) ones too....

Anyway the main thing ios that Brian doesn't forget the whiskey as I'm already on the case perfecting the smoked venison...

Wink

Kim you guys are on the list and dates are set.

We are still finalising costs but I anticipate them being under £300 (plus £20 for the import permits and postage.)

For those that had import permits fro last year can you look to see if they are still valid to these dates please. I made them for a 1 year duration IIRC so some of you may not need a new permit.
