Folks.

Out on some grounds chasing Sika this last weekend.

Had a few attempted stalks - but busted by the changeable wind every time.

Moved into a thick spruce plantation and attempted calling for twenty minutes or so - with no success whatever.

Decided to call it a day and picked up with little effort at stealth. As is so often the case - within 80m this young fellow was lying down feeling sorry for himself.

He ran - but paused for a second too long to try and work out what had disturbed him.

Interesting - he had a large bruise in the groin. Looked very much as though he had received an antler in the belly while trying to get away from another stag.

You can clearly see the staining around the belly due to the rut. The stag's musk is very strong and can often be smelled when moving past wallows and scored trees.

Very interesting animals to stalk - incredibly wary and have amazing eyesight.

Ian,

Very nice stag indeed!
Ever try calling Sika and if so, what call do you use?

Regards,

Pete
