How to deal with nasty dogs:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4823960.stm

Only 12 shots were fired. Wonder did they use their Glocks or their MP'5s?

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

You would have thought, trained, police marksmen could have dropped 2 dogs with less than 12 shots Confused

The only one's that really needed shooting are the owners that trained the pit-bulls in the first place.

When the SAS trooper was asked under oath, why he had shot the terrorist 15 times he replied "because I ran out of bullets"

Dan, we don't have "trained police marksmen" here, though not doubt, some shoot much better than others. Every bugger gets a glock day one. They then have to qualify with either a MP5 or a G5 rifle.

The long guns are much less in evidence these days, so I am guessing these guys only had the pistols to hand, might explain the numbers of shots fired.

Sorry Brian, my bad.

Would have thought somebody/anybody armed with a Glock or an MP5 could have dropped 2 dogs with less than 12 shots Smiler Smiler Smiler

Surely there would have been less expense to the Police Dept if the officers had just run up to the dogs and hit them the guns thumb

Dan

As FB says, they are only 9mm's.

Now if they had .45's or .308win rifles, one shot each might have done.

No doubt Col Cooper would have something to say on the subject.

We lost 26 sheep one morning to three stanadard poodles one white one black one brown, some sheep fell through the ice on the pond some aborted some died later.Shot the black one and the brown one, had enough gun that day! usually I carried a 1994 in 22mag, but had the trusty o'l 30/30, two shots two kills very efficient!!
Turned out the owner of the dogs was a solicitor from Rochdale who didn't want any fuss and paid us for the slaughter his dogs created.
My sympathy goes out to the Farmer concerned,he will have a different outlook on dogs from now on..

As for police marksman, we only have to look at the person carrying the chair leg home, one shot him through the hand, was probably surrendering. We have very good friend who before was a police officer was a gamekeeper/stalker, he resigned from the firearms unit because of what he described as the total farsical training, they had no understanding of firearms and said that the officers always felt uncomfortable using them.
not very reassuring!!

If they had waited for the dogs to line up they could of had a toofer-- one shot two dogs.
Whats up with pitt bulls anyway? Many areas in the states are banning ownership of the breed

from what i"ve seen of the cops here in NI, it"s amazing that they did"nt shoot themselves or bystanders. in today"s pc world, gun handling and proficiency is way down the list of priorities, with most training time devoted to classroom situations. from what i"ve seen of their gun handling, i"m not sure they should all be armed. having said that, the PSNI"s safety record is nowhere near as bad as the armed response teams on the mainland where carrying a chair leg home from a hardware shop can get you mowed down with an MP5!
a shotgun would have been a handy thing in the dog shooting situation, but as we all know you"re never carrying the gun that you want!
good shooting.

Brass, you're right on the shotgun. A 12 bore with an 1 1/4oz of BB or No1 shot is the only medicine for ill mannered dogs.

perhaps it was one each for the pit bulls and the rest for the collie!!
Claret dabbler, must slightly disagree withyou on the 12 gauge, we carried in the L/Rover a n old Ithaca roadblocker in 10 gauge filled with 2oz of 00 buck, we didn't shoot many dogs with it but it sure was good on squirrels nests..

Well, seeing it was the Police, I'm suprised they didn't use their own suggested methods of dealing with animals, you know....Cut their throats or hit them with a hammer Confused
