Can anybody shed light 0n what effect will be made on accuracy, reducing the length of a barrel from 21" to about 17" or 18", I am aware that I will be loosing some velocity, but if accuracy is unaffected then I would like to try it.

The reason for this is that I want to fit an ASE UTRA JetZ moderator, this will extend the length of my barrel by 150mm.

Thoughts and observations would be appretiated

I would suggest you do it. Moderated rifles with standard length barrels is a pet hate of mine.

My 243 is 19" which is a good compromise. The 243 loses a lot more velocity with each inch but even so it still works very well indeed.

My speer reloading guide stated that velocity loss for 7mm08 by moving to the 18.5" remington model 7 from their 22-24" barrel (can't remember which) would be 100-150fps. That would still allow you to reach 2,800fps with 140s I think.

Let us know how it goes - I plan to have a 19" 7mm08 next year.

Accuracy could be better as the shorter barrel becomes stiffer. Try to use a good smith who works to tight tolerances and a better thread than 1/2" UNF which is a bit thin for 7mm

I don't get too wrapped around the handle on tube lengths. I've had & still have some really short barreled carbines that have given me sterling performance, especially in cartridges such as .308 Win. & .243 Win. - your 7mm/08 is right in there with them as to case size. Like 1894 says; sometimes a shorter tube equals more barrel stiffness and improved accuracy.

The expired beasts apparently didn't notice much concerning the length of my barrels either.

Since you mentioned accuracy - about the only thing a gunsmith can screw up on this case would be cutting the end of the barrel square and ensuring a good barrel crown in conjucntion with the threads for your moderator are all done correctly. After that you ought to be home free.

Cheers,

You have prompted me to ask a question from your previous post. What can be the associated problems with a 1/2" unf on a 7mm bore.

I have just had a jet z fitted to my 270 with 1/2" unf and it is fine but I do want to fit the same mod on a 30 cal. Do you know if having thin sidewalls to the barrel where it is threaded presents problems and also what are these problems.

I would be interested to hear your opinion as it may prevent me from doing it.

Many thanks

Sounds like everybody is in agreement on this project then!!

1894mk2, that was going to be my next question - the length of the model 7 barrel, my rifle is a Rem 700, all should be good.

Just waiting for Jackson rifles to get back to me regarding trade price on the JetZ.

On the thread size topic, I believe a finer thread has been used on a friends JetZ and am sure he will comment on this when he reads this post...

Cheers fellas Wink

Some Thompson Center Encore Rifle Barrels are 20" and I have a Bullberry 20" encore rifle barrel chambered in SW460mag, it shoots 454casull & 45lc ammo accurately but haven't tried the sw460 mag have to wait for my back surgery to heal.

NW,
i would say go for it!!!

have had a few phone conversations with the man in somerset today,
you will laugh,
firstly we got on the subject of barrel length again and secondly the subject of AI'ing chambers.

i know AI'ing on a 7mm08 isnt really going to make a nips worth of difference but i reckon that by the time you read this i am the proud father of a 18" 7mm08AI rifle!

as for thread i didnt really pay much attention, i know shrek has got a fine thread for the jetz, but then there is enough meat around the crown.

My mod came 1/2UNF for my 243 I spoke to my smith who said that as I allready had it it would be OK (but not ideal)for my proposed 7mm08 but that he really did not like it on 30cals as there was so little meat left and there could be problems with muzzle flaring.

I have no way of knowing if this is true or not - just reporting it as I was told.

Thanks for the info.

The muzzle flaring is something I had thought about also. It certainly has given me something to think about and I think I will give it some serious consideration before jumping in. Certainly more due diligence required on my part before proceeding.

Thanks

Jon
