I`m going to Spain for an ibex hunt in just over a week. There might be possible to hunt red deer as well.
Are the red deer native to Spain? Is Spain a part of their natural range or have they been introduced?

Red deer are native to Spain. Depending on where you get your information, you might find Spanish red deer grouped in a different sub-species, but people disagree on taxonomy...

Spanish red deer can grow some good trophies. Plenty of availability if you look on the web.

Thanks guys!
I can garantuee you a full report, Arild! Smiler
Don't know if I'll be able to hunt red deer yet. This is both due to time and economy.. For those big ones I think I need a big bucket of dollars, but I might afford a selection stag.. Smiler

I've shot red deer in Spain and in New Zealand. Those in Spain were almost half the body size of the stags I saw on New Zealand's hunting estates. A Spanish stag typically was only slightly larger than a big mule deer; the stags in New Zealand were nearly the size of a yearling elk. Antler lengths were proportional to their body size. The photos above are of truly exceptional specimens.

I am sure someone from Spain will be more helpful for you but let me tell you that the truly red stag from Spain are MUCH smaller than the eastern Europe deers.

The monster of the topic above is not a truly deer from spanish lines. "El ciervo ibérico" is smaller. There has been some discussion in Spain to protect their original bloods and to keep away those eastern europeans bloods but some enclosures breed those monsters for "trophy" hunters.

DUK, do you really believe that that is a wild deer from a "wild" area... Big Grin

Truly Huge Free Range Red Deers are in Hungary. South and West from the Balaton Lake.Near the Danube and Drava River.
Lenti, Labod, Gemenc, Karapanca and Sellye are the most Famous Areas for BIG Red Stags.

Most of the Monster Red Stags from New Zealand, Spain, Bulgaria coming from High Fence Estates...

I wanted to share some picture of red deer from Spain, no intention here to sell hunts.

However, there is no "typical" spanish red deer as there is no "typical" whitetail from the US, the conditions like environment and especially the food sources are just too different. Just compare the semiarid La Mancha with the humid Picos de Europa or the Pyrenee mountains.

Spring and summer 2008 were extremely humid even on the Meseta Central, thus providing for much better than average food crops.

There are big stags there, no doubt about it. I also saw pictures from red deer taken from real wild areas under government control. They were as big both by body mass as well as by antlers than the ones we have here.

Big Grin Nope, not this time..
Flying to Malaga. Then a couple of hours by car to Granada. The hunting will mostly be done from there into the Sierra Nevada, Tejada and Almijara mountains.
Only two days left. Can`t wait!
I promise you a report on kammeret as well!

Thanks for the input, guys!
Interesting info on the spanish red deer. We`ll see what happens.

Good luck on your hunt too Dan! And please post a report!
