Red stag hunt in Masuria / Poland

Dear all,

please find attached a few pics of the red stag hunt of my father and myself in North East Poland (Masuria) during one week at end of september.

On the fourth day in the morning I shot this red stag in a very thick oak wood after a quite long stalk - we heard him roaring all the time, but I was extremly difficult to get so close to him that I could manage to get a shot - Finally I managed to get him into my rectiles for a moment and then I directly shot him at a distance of about twenty meters. After the first shot no reaction - my first thought was that the 9,3x62 bullet might have been deflected by the thick brush, so I immediately shot again with my R93 - then he went down luckily.

The stag was a medium-aged deer with a trophy below average for that area - a good selection stag.

My father was also successful on the same morning - also a medium-aged selection stag:

The very warm, rainy and windy weather prevented a better hunting result - my father also wanted to get an old and big stag and myself some wild boar, but we were nevertheless both happy!
Besides red deer, wild boar and roe deer the area were we hunted also holds mouse, wolf and lynx and European buffalo which makes the area really special to hunt:

We will definitively come back there another time!

Waidmannsheil & Darz Bor!

Wow, that is nice scenery and deer are good heads too!
Were the bison on that land hunted? You are lucky to have been given a 2nd chance from the hunting gods...

Boghossian,

thanks a lot!

(But both stags cannot be compared to your father's!)

Both shots were actually good hits on the shoulder / in the "boiler room", but none of them exited
(I think the 16,5g Round Nose Geco Bullet might have been a little bit soft for a red deer with over 132kg in the roar...)

The bison are hunted, but the hunting season I think starts there not before December... In general, I found the bison quite trusting, but that also seems to be during their hunting season, so to hunt them would not be a real challenge - just find them and then place a bullet into the right bull in the right place...

Best regards,

Erik

Weidmannsheil Erik! It looks pretty thick where the pictures of your stag was taken. Was that were you took him, or was it where he holed up after the shot?? What type of hunting was this, stand or still (Pirsch) hunting??

Mike,

Waidmannsdank!

We took the pictures directly where the stag has been fallen after the second shot - you are right a pretty thick area, but the only chance to get a shot!

We were nearly only still hunting - all the mornings and also in the evenings - only at dawn we were usually went on a high stand. (I think I will also post a longer report in the (German) W&H-Forum soon, there you can get the full story of the hunt!)

Best regards & good hunting

Erik
