Hunting horns?

This forum looks like a good place to ask.

I want to buy a hunting horn - brass horn, perhaps with a leather grip wound around the bottom. One of the circular horns (sorry don't know the musical terms). Does not need to have any keys or whatever.

If anyone knows of a web site where they can be purchased preferably online with secure facilities and that ships worldwide it would be much appreciated.

Also if anyone can give any information on how they are used in Europe as part of hunting traditions.

Thanks

I once had a wonderful experience of walking in the Vienna Woods while a huntsman played hunting horn music in the distance somewhere.

Magical and very appropriate while watching the boar frolic in the forest.

NitroX,

You can get these things in any well assorted hunting shop in Europe. Unfortunately, there are not a bunch of these places with a website set up for proper e-business [Frown]

Frankonia in Germany is one of the best mail-order addresses for European hunting gear. Their website exists: Frankonia - at least for contact purposes but it may be you'd have to call or e-mail them to get what you want.
Another option in Germany is Kettner (about the same quality as Frankonia), their (also pretty useless) website is: Kettner - also mostly for contact purposes

I checked the prices in my Swiss Kettner catalog from a couple of years back (only one at hand). Costs ran from CHF189 for a horn small enough to fit in the pocket of your parka, over CHF200-500 for the regular size horns (depending on make) to CHF620 for one of the huge "Parforce" horns. US$1 = CHF1.40. All this just to give you an idea of prices.

Have not got a clue about quality or any part of the musical business...

You can also get tapes (book?) with the right signals - Kettner or Frankonis will supply. Don't forget in Europe there is a signal for almost any occasion: roe dead, boar dead, stag dead, fox dead etc etc.

Good luck and Weidmannsheil

Ha, success! Kettner actually had the horns on their website. Try this on for size:

If you can go to Chambord for Game fair, on june.
A lot of hunting horns there, a lot of concerts, an incredible availability and you can also prove them.

bye

I would recommend to get one from Germany, the quality is often good and the selection is larger.

Are you going to haraze the entire neighbourhood by tooting in this horn. Think twice about it if you like the fellows next door [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Fellows,

Thanks for the replies.

mho

Checked out the Kettner link. Looks possible but will also see if I can get a new catalogie from Frankonia as well.

Steve

Would LOVE to visit Chambord during the fair. Have visited Chambord one Christmas, plus Cheverny etc, but I would be lucky to be there any time at the right time.

Johan

I already harass the neighbours. One rainy evening prior to going to Zim on safari I really needed to test out some loads. So I setup my shooting bench in the carport at the back of my house and an impromtu range from the house to the target. I parked my Landcruiser 4WD near the target with the headlights illuminating the target. Yes it was after dusk.
(note the direction was completely safe - except for my car - with a mound (river bank) behind and no houses for 2 kms in that direction and none in the line of sight).

Shot off about 20 rounds of .375 (and did it echo in the carport! [Eek!] ). All the neighbours dogs were going crazy.

My next door neighbour (about 300 to 400 metres away) later did say she had a real fright in her kitchen when the first one went off. [Roll Eyes]

I must do that every year though - just to keep the right attitude going ie the crazy neighbour. (ie NO ONE trespasses on my land anymore [Wink] )

I plan to sound off the horn at the right and appropriate times. Also at the beginning and ending of hunts, of major travels etc.

Now where can I get a working large minature canon ? [Confused] [Wink] To sound the noon and midnight hours [Razz]

Canon available from: The Barometer Shop, Leominster, Herefordshire, England.
You can get the phone number via directory enquiries.
Brass, stands about 50cm high, very heavy. Fires a 10b shotgun shell blank.
VERY LOUD!!

Any other obscure needs?? [Smile]

No if I get a cannon I want a traditional muzzle loading cannon with fuse, powder, wadding and ball (or more wadding - I guess as a blank).

How would I smuggle one of these through customs?

But your suggestion is intruguing.

Seriously i remember seeing a film about an armourer I think it was in Spain or Italy that makes minature cannon. And I recently saw a film about some eccentric lord or something from your neck of the woods that fires one off at sundown each evening (or noon?).

But I AM looking for a hunting horn.

Nitro,

In Edinburgh they still fire a field gun every day at 1 O'Clock off then ramparts of the castle. I am not sure what sort it is, but it might be a ww2 vintage 21lb...

Regards,

Pete

My father, who was a music teacher, made a hunting horn out of a damaged french horn. He took out the valves and added a trombone mouthpiece. You want magical tones? That thing sounding out over the foggy California foothills probably called the trolls over from Norway.

I don't know about how things are in other benighted parts of the world, but here cannon are perfectly legal (as are Gatling guns!) clear up to coastal artillary size, just so long as they are black powder. At my "local" range the Blue and Grey Reinactors have a monthly meeting on Sunday mornings and they always have a cannon match, according to the rangemaster. I simply must go out and watch some day.

Norweigian trolls, benighted parts of the world and minature cannon. Sounds wonderful.

They just have to be black powder, else you miss out on the joy and effect of all that smoke.

If you wish to buy a nice used hunting horn go to ebay.de and search for "jagdhorn". You will find several, at very fair prices (under 100 Euros). Be sure the seller is willing to ship abroad; some do, some don't. Happy horning!
With kind regards,
montenegrin
