Hunter commits suicide after animal activists cyberbully her: report

By Jackie Salo July 24, 2017 | 7:21pm | Updated

A popular Spanish hunter took her life after receiving threats on social media from animal rights activists, according to reports.

Melania Capitan, 27, was found dead Wednesday from an apparent suicide at her apartment in Huesca, Spain, according to Crime Online, citing Spanish hunting magazine Jara y Sedal.

Capitan, from Catalonia, Spain, had amassed a huge fan base on social media posting images of herself hunting. Her Facebook page, where she shared hunting tips, had nearly 39,000 followers.

Some posts, however, were controversial for animal rights activists who would leave harassing messages, the Daily Mail reported. It is not known if her death was related to the cyberbullying.

The Daily Mail reported that the blond huntress left a suicide note for friends, but the contents of the letter have not been released.

Critics continued to flood her Facebook page with messages even after she died.

“She’s finished the lives of many animals and no one defended the death of them… I think our [lives are] worth the same as theirs,” one person wrote.

Others mourned her death, saying the loss was a “shame.”

“I do not like hunting, defending animals and killing for [hobby] seems horrible to me. But it’s a shame that this girl took her life,” another user wrote.

I am kind of torn up by this, I lived in Spain for a couple of years and I always thought Spain was a hunting country. Proud one at that.

I hope whoever pushed this girl off the cliff spends the rest of their life working to right their wrong.

Young women are exceptionally vulnerable to attacks like this.

Cyber bullying knows no borders. It seems the bulk comes out of the UK though. Lots of the bullies in this case are celebrating their victory.

I don't wanna sound cynical, but normal and healthy person can't be pushed to commit suicide unless they somehow loose all hope and will to live
Usually there is more to it then some internet bullying

Boarkiller,

My friend you say that because you are a man with enough intestinal fortitude to shrug it off. I used to think that it was mostly women that could be pushed off the edge, but I have had a couple of young guys that worked for me on active duty that took some wrong turns and killed themselves as well.

Younger women are exceptionally drawn into this kind of behavior. She must have not have had enough family and friends that had their whits about them to stop this behavior.

I have seen the effect that cyber bullying has on children and young people and their families. Its sadly endemic amongst younger generations and is highly damaging. Whilst it may not be physical I have seen the harmful and tragic effects that it can cause.

I must admit I won't post pictures of my hunting success online / facebook for this very reason.

BWW, I have not picked on her just being woman
My whole take on this is strictly personal responsibility
Anyway you look at it or take it in, it is deeper issue then some push or shove
And I hear you, my Neighbor's son entered HS and three weeks into it hung himself at home
Through grapevine, I heard other boys simply called him queer etc.
It is always sad situation but we have all been there when we were younger
There was always that one that would pick on you somehow somewhere.
99% of the time you shrug it off and that small percentage will not...
Life is great but it has ugly side at times

Like I said at first, I didn't wanna sound cynical, just my take on things

Suicide and what causes some folks to take that route is still a mystery, both to ordinary people and scientists.

Absolutely, personal reponsability comes first! I know you weren't picking on her because she is a woman.

Family and friends say it was personal problems not cyber bullying. I wonder if the antis started this to take credit and get other fruitcakes to start bullying hunters.

Suicide is one of those "not talked about" things that are frighteningly common.
This chart is for the US, and I do not have any clue how the statistics in Spain compare but it is not that surprising when looked at as this is the second leading cause of death in this age group:

Another one on the military, this stops at 2011 and I believe that now there are more suicides than combat deaths but please research it yourself before quoting as I may be mistaken and too lazy to look it up right now:

I always find it curious how suicide never gets the press that much and especially how anti gun people never address how there are more suicides in this country than homicides.

Either way, it is a tragedy that another young person has taken their own life no matter what.

Young people are stupid, and they internalize shit like no one I have ever seen.

I know this because I used to be the same way, and until about 27 or 28 I was just as stupid, at 42, I am not quite as stupid, but I don't really ever internalize anything anymore.

As a retired NCO, I have had quite a few people I know in the military die. For everyone we lost in combat, we lost one in a vehicle accident (mostly motorcycles), and usually one to suicide.
