Dear all, I have been drawn away by another, my trusted partner of many years is going to be sidelined by a slimmer younger model!!! I know Tempted by another is no reason to abandon one morals, but she is more pretty than the older one and has a lot more go about her, and I will not embarassed when I show her off in public like the old over weight one. Maybe I can be dissuaded but I think my heart is set!! My 16 3/4 lbs savage in 25-06 is being replaced by a Winchester sporter magnum in 264 win mag at 7 3/4 lbs, please tell me I have made the right decision.. regards griff

Dave, seriously looked at a 270 weatherby, but the money came into it as usual. one was the price of a new mod at £400 for the 270 whereas the mod I have on the 25 will do for the 264,and secondly the owner of the gun owes me money and has done since 2003.. otherwise would have gone down the weatherby road in the shape of the Accumark.. regards griff

There isn't two shits difference between a 264 and a .270 wby.

Ah! Well, in that case, have fun with your new 264! It's a good cartridge, I used one for culling fallow deer at long range, and it worked fine. If you can get them, try Woodleighs new 6.5 140gr protected point. Expands nicely, yet still penetrates quite well. For reds though, you might want to try the 160gr. Let us know how you get on? D99, perahps in your part of the world there is no difference, but where I live, one is legal for deer, and one is not! To me that's enough of a reason. Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Actually D99, since you mention it, the 270 Win will exceed the energy levels of a 264, with each cartridge using best possible safe handloads, from equal (22") BBl lengths. In order to get the best from the 264, you need 26" or better. griff, how long is the BBL on your new rifle? The one I ended up with was 28", shot quite well for about 1200 rounds, until the accuracy started to drop off. If you are only shooting 20rds a year, that's still a lifetime of shooting. Dave, just took a quick look at infinity to compare loads. 25-06 1297ftlbs at 400yds 264 @ 3000fps = 1733ftlbs at 400yds 270 @ 3000fps = 1594ftlbs at 400yds must be the b.c. one of the reasons for abandoning the 25-06 was the lack of good bullets with a high b.c. and wanted something with a bit more puff at 400yds regards griff

griff, you are right it is probably the b.c. Did you calculate based on 22" BBLs? The last year I had mine, I used a load with the Barnes 140gr XFB. ADI AR2213SC ( H4831), 62gr, CCI mag primer, for 3100fps (msd of 35fps). This load was right on the edge, so drop at least 6gr to start, but killed like lighting on Fallow and Red , even at longer distances. If I still needed a long range deer rifle for Fallow or Red, and couldn't have a 270, this would be the one. Since most of my shooting now is in small farms, for foxes, hares, rabbits, ducks and deer, my combo gun in 7x57R/12g seems to get used all the time. Here's hoping your new rifle works out for you! Have fun! Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Sambar, For me the 264 is a 26 inch fat barreled kind of affair, built like a M700 Sendaro! I have never liked the 270 for anything. I will agree that it's a more efficient cartridge than the 264 in similar barrels. Put both in a 26 inch barrel and then make the same comparison!

G'day, you are quite right, the 264 really shines with heavy loads and longer (>26")BBLs. The better SD and heavier bullets, combine to make it an excellent round. It is just not legal here in OZ for sambar, while the 270 Win is the minimum cal allowed. Also the 264 can be hard to find, outside of the big cities, while the 270 win, you can find almost anywhere. The 270 Weatherby is even harder to find, but superior to either of the others. I would bet that the critters can't tell the difference downrange, if each cartridge is set up optimally. I just hope that griffs rifle turns out to be a good one, and he gets some good use from it! Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

I am really suprised you don't like the 338 Winchester for Sambar. I like wierd cartridges of all makes, but I'll take a plain vanilla 338 in my R93 for Elk anyday of the week.

I used to use a .338Win Mag, in a ruger m77. damn gun shot tiny groups all day. Great rifle. Sold it to a guy just starting out in my deerstalking club, he needed a good rifle, and I had far too many. Now I use either a 9.3x62 in an R93, or a 9.3x74R in a 95BBF. Both seem to work fine at the ranges (<150m) I use the at. The BBF gets most of the work, since I never know what critter I will see. Deer, fox, hare, rabbit, feral dog or cat, ducks (in season). If I'm away with the club, it will be the R93, as all I will be hunting is deer. If the terrain I hunted were more open, you bet I would have a 338 BBL in the R93. It's a great cartridge, one of my all time favourites. Cheers, Dave. Non Illegitium Carborundum. Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Will you be bringing your new bride with you to Arran? Your shoulder will surely thank you now, as it will hurt much less carrying that weight around on the hill. Tell me, how did you arrive at such a caliber and rifle weight for hill stalking? Or was it a 'one rifle fits all' senario.
