Bear Trial, nothing!

During the Napoleonic wars, a ship was wrecked off the North East coast of England. The ship had a pet monkey as a ship's masoct.

The monkey survived the loss of the ship, unlike the crew. Anyway, the monkey was 'captured' and as it could not speak English, the locals put the unfortunate monkey on trial as a French 'spy'.

The monkey was duly found guilty and hung at Hartlepool.

Something which the good folk of Sunderland, Middlesborough and Necastle remind their neighbours of to this day!

I believe the monkey apppears in the coat of arms of Hartlepool and is the now the mascot of Hartlepool football club.
