Henrik, I have used the 5,6x50R on roe and I've had the opportunity to try a number of different bullets: Hornady's 52gr Hollow Point Match and 60gr Spire Point, Sierra's 55gr Game King, Speer's 55 and 70gr Soft Points, RWS's 55 and 63gr T-Mantle and 74gr KS, Nosler's 55gr Balistic Tip and 60gr Partition, Barnes' 53gr XLC, and Winchesters's 64gr Power Point come now to my mind.

My favourite one is Hornady's 60gr Spire Point which, loaded at 3,250 fps, has always proved extremely effective.

The rest of the bullets, except the Barnes XLC and the Nosler Partition, were also very effective. In my opinion you cannot find a bullet which is too soft for roe, and controlled expansion bullets are not needed. These super penetrators seem to kill much slower than the rest.

An adult buck in its prime condition does not easily weigh more than 32 kilos. Though tenacious to life, they have a rather light frame and bone structure and the 5,6x50R with a soft bullet is, in my opinion, a perfect combination for the patient and skilled stalker.

I know this is a controversial point but I always wonder what do those who believe the .270, for example, is the reasonable minimum, use for 200 kilo red deer.

Regards,

Montero

7x65R seems a bit "overkill" for roedeer

Henrik, don't worry about the 7x65R being "overkill" for roe. It will work perfectly. You could get away with less and enjoy a bit less recoil, but the 7x65R is a great cartridge, and it will do a great job on roe.

Hello 1894,
there might be on less option to worry about then. I think that I will go with 7x65R and a 5.6x50R barrel. The reasoning behind this is that 7x65R seems a bit "overkill" for roedeer but it will be a perfect match for bigger game (red deer, fallow deer, moose and boars) What are your experience with 5.6x50R for roe? What is your favourite bullet?

Henrik

I'd go with the 7x65R (you can always load it down to 7x57 ballistics, if you wish). Years ago, when the K95 came out, I tested and wrote it up for hunting magazines. I was mightily impressed as it shot into one hole and some other ones I tried later on were no different in terms of accuracy.

Henrik,

Decisions, decisions!

Given a 7x65R the logical choice is as Montero states a 5.6x50R. I find mine wonderful but given a little pressure such as a previous sighting of a medal buck I would generaly break out the 6.5x57R barrel or if I had it the 7x65R barrel. I have shot roe with my 7x57 (140gr at 2,800fps, given a good bullet it is not damaging)

Another element in the favour of the 5.6 is it being better suited to practice.
