well being the new year and all that I thought I'd go for a stalk yesterday morning and also try out my new pair of Le Chameau boots I treated myself to (the mouflon plus they are fantastic and I highly recomend them)

So Saturday morning started by getting up a silly O'clock and loading the gear into the ice box sorry I mean Land Rover and heading off on the 75 mile drive to my ground. I was a cold morning with a hard frost as daylight broke I was very overcast but not a breath of wind.
I I sat in one fields were there is normaly alot of activity but nothing was moving. so I went for a walk and after about an hour I still had not even seen as much as a foot print.

has I headed back to the truck I glassed over a small medow below me, I seen nothing and went to head off when I heard a loud bark, I looked again I spied a small Fallow doe hinding in hole in the headge.

So I set up my sticks and took my rifle off my shoulder and the wee fecker took off like a greyhound. she headed up the hill away from me, and 3 more does went with her.
they had been on the other side of the headge were I couldn't see them.

but the tail end doe stopped and turned side on looking at me. I ranged her at 199m and as she was heading for heavy cover I put the cross hairs on the middle of the shoulder and a 140gr 6.5x55 hit the mark and she dropped on the spot (it was abit messy when I got the skin off both shoulder smashed to bits).

Geting it out onto the lane was hard work! it took me over an hour and ended up using the winch on the Land Rover to get it up the last 40m. So known I have to find the space in the freezer! Roll Eyes

anyway roll on Baldock! Big Grin

Well done, I won"t lower myself to make smartass comments about the 6.5 not being as good as the 243(or Hornet dancing), or needing a good dog!
It"s about time somebody shot some of those deer down there!
Looking forward to Baldock, not long now.
