Got a chance to pick up a couple of Krieghoff Ultra Combo Guns but don't have a solid idea of their value. #1) 12ga and 30/06 with double triggers...front is a set-trigger for the rifle. New and unfired. #2) 12ga and .270 set up the same as #1) exccept it has been fired and has a 1x4 variable scope mounted on it. Anyone have any experience or comments with respect to quality, what to look for and the value? DB Bill aka Bill George

I have used a Krieghof combination gun (Ultra Drilling) for quite a few years now. I have been happy with the quality, accuracy and the modern design features: manual cocking mechanism allows you to carry the gun with a loaded chamber in complete safety, and the triggers are about as good as they come on a combination gun. The Krieghof triggers were a bit of a revolution when they first appeared about 10-15 years ago. They were one of the first (and still few) trigger systems for combination guns, that allowed equivalent trigger pulls for front and rear triggers. The Ultra series is Krieghofs lowest line, and they are not particularly elegant weapons. But to me that is easily outweighed by the practicality of the manual cocking system. That is just a fabulous feature! I believe the Ultras use a synthetic trigger guard. Mine broke when I happened to fall on the gun one icy winter day, but it was no big deal having it replaced. Since then, I have not had problems with the gun. The price of guns like this depends a lot on the options such as engravings, long side plates, upgraded wood etc etc. The base price for an Ultra over-and-under combination gun will be around 3000 Euro in Europe - that is about $3600 with an exchange rate of .83 Euro/$. That is list price, and with luck you might be able to get a discount approaching 10%, but probably not a whole bunch more. So what the guns you are looking at are worth, depends a whole bunch on the options they have. Looking at a Frankonia catalog, list prices for optional engravings run between Euro 500 and 3000 (I know that is a bit ridiculous, but that is what they are listed at ). Also, the mounts used on these types of guns are typically quite expensive. Depending on the type of mount used, it is not uncommon for the mount alone to be around 300 Euro.... Only then comes the scope. The above prices are obviously European prices, I have never priced something like this in the States, so I have little idea of what regular prices are like in the US?? If the guns are new, they should probably be uproblematic. With a used combination gun, you always have to watch out for the action being loose. I doubt that will be case for the guns you are looking at. The new Krieghof models your are looking at are pretty strong, and these don't sound as if they have seen a lot of use. If the mount on the .270 uses a dovetail, do check that the dovetail has not been worn by over zealous use of the QD feature. I.e. does the mount feel snug and tight when you turn in the dovetail. If there is any play, you'll need the dovetail insert in the rib replaced, not a big deal, but still... Good luck with your potentially new "Bockbüchsflinte" - as the guns are properly called in German. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I have no experience with the combo`s from Krieghoff, but I own a Plus drilling that I`m very happy with. The manual cocking system is just great. It`s a bit harder than a regular safety, but after some practice it`s just as easy for me, even for quick shots. I will not try to make a decision for you, but in Norway the combo`s and drillings from Krieghoff are priced pretty equal, so why not opt for the drilling? An extra shotgun-barrel might come in handy, some extra weight though, but mine is a 20 gauge and that makes it lighter. Just a suggestion.. Just a few pics to illustrate the versatility.. Try Alan Rhone at Krieghoff.co.uk. He is a font of knowledge with all things krieghoff. I have a K80 which has has an aweful lot of hard use, and is as good as new.

Anders Nice drilling, nice pictures, nice game. I agree, a Drilling has much more appeal and usefullness to me than a combo gun. I had a combo gun in 12x222. I much prefer a drilling. You Europeans are well ahead of us on these type of guns. If More Americans would try them they would see how good a HUNTING gun they are. My wifes favorite gun is her Sauer 12x12x30-06 Drilling with a 4x Kahles scope in claw mounts. I just asked her to be sure, and she did not hesitate with the answer. G'day, For me, I would take the BBF any day, most of the drillings I have tried have been a bit on the chunky side, the sole execption being the Sauer, same as N E 450 No2 bought for his wife. the BBF just seems a bit lighter, slightly more 'lively' in the hands. It' all very subjective, I know, If you want a drilling then grab one, I don't think you will regret it! But DB asked about the Ultra combos, both really good guns. Personally, I'd take the 270/12g, for me it would be close to ideal. For those after slightly bigger critters, or who may need the heavier pill, or just plain want one, the 30-06 would be the way to go. Tell you what DB, which ever one you don't want, I'll take, O.K?
