I bought a 2nd hand Tikka 695 in 7x64 off the net a few weeks ago and have been shooting it enough to know that it's 18.5 inch barrel is offensive enough that it has to go.

So we have talked about this before, and I would like your input.

I am thinking 6.5x55 and 280, but the 25-06 might beat out the 280. I have another Tikka 695 in 270 (and as it is public knowledge that I hate the 270) it is probably due for a rebarrel as well.

Not to be that guy,

ohh well i´ll just have to an 18,5' barrel for a 7x64 is a very expensive flame thrower, I could have told you that from the start.

This here is my little advice, the cal is great, a true plains game round, just get a barrel long enough to let it show it´s potential, if you already have cases, dies and so forth there is no other needs than a longer barrel.

However if you still insist I would go fo the 6,5-06, why well the shear amount of great bullets and some very impressive stats.

the 6,5-06 brass is also easy to make from Lapua 30-06 cases yielding long life and great reloadability, is that a word by the way.

270/280 are cals that I am indifferent to, I love the little 6,5x55 though, as a final note short barrels are best with stubby rounds,

308 Win/358 Win and the one off 366-08 Win Wink

Best regards Chris

I can see no point in the 25-06 option. Quite frankly it dies NOTHING that the 260 Remington (or 6.5 x 55) or the 270 Winchester/280 Remington ddoes not do either more efficiently or better.

25-06 is an American solution to decent long standing European cartridges such as the 6.5 x 55 or the 6.5 x 57.

In what loading does the 25-06 outperform the 280 (or 270)?

The 25-06 is a 3300-3400 FPS gun with 100 grain bullets.

The 6.5x55 or 6.5x57 will not do that. Only factory loads in the 6.5x68 and the 264 Winchester Magnum will reach those velocities.

I have a nice 25-06 but I don't get a lot of use out of it.

I think the 6.5x55 is interesting, as I think it would be nice to have a rifle that wasn't super heavy, didn't kick the hell out of you, and just was easy to shoot.

270 Winchester will reach 3,335 with 100 grains on one site I can refer you too, 3,400 fps, 3,446 fps and 3,480 fps on "reloader's nest" website in handloads.

On same "reloader's nest" 280 Remington has a handload for it at 3,419 fps.

Can't see any handloads at all for 140 grain, 160 grain or 175 grain for 25-06 however at any velocity.

I think Husqvarna M98 is right on with the
6,5-06 recommendation. It is easy to reload, light recoil and absolutely deadly. I use 140 grain bullets, with BC of .640. I just love that 6,5 bore!

Well thank you shotgun,

FPS are not all there is to the world, high BC is better, the 139 Scenar in the 6,5-06 is a combo that will reach out to the 1K mark and then some without issues.

For real life hunting a TTSX from Barns in 6,5 will get some very impresssive figures in the same cal.

Ohh well best regards/Chris

I found another 695 in a Stainless 30-06, probably just going to try and trade. That or find another rifle I want.

A rebarrel is going to cost $750 so it's not worth it to deal with.
