Hi,
I went on a mouflon hunt in the czech republic this april and managed to shoot a 208.5 CIC point ram on the first evening.
How would this trophy rank in this day and age, my guide said it was a rare trophy, but I am not familiar with mouflon.
How would you guys rate mouflon as a game animal? They were definitely wary once they spot you, but my hunt lasted 4 hours when I saw two big males from the high seat on the first night and shot mine with a Brno 7x57 that I borrowed from the guide....but the people who went before me spent 6 weekends hunting before shooting a 195 point ram.
Lastly, is it true that you can tell a mouflon's age by counting the rings on its horns?? By that count, my ram is only 5 yrs old.....is that possible?

I have posted a picture of the mouflon on this website, although the quality of the scanning is not tops, you get the idea. Any past experiences with this animal would be appreciated!

Fine lookin' bit of mutton, that. Sounds like somethin' I'll have to try, someday, what? Oh, th'bit about bein' able to count rings for a sheep's age is rot, don'tcherknow. The wildlife biologist johnnies 'n' janies pull a back tooth and check th' wear to get a true age. From the look of that head, I'd put him at more like 7 or 8. They don't live that long.

I was amazed by the thickset appearance of the animals, but found he weighed about 55kgs (120lbs). The ram was shot in April so the rut was over and he didn't seem to stink too much. My father tried to shoot a young cull animal so we could try eating a mouflon, but the groups were VERY difficult to approach and the guide was v. careful not to let us shoot unless the animal had been checked properly...
I am in agreement with you about the age being about 7 oldsarge as it seems impossible for 34 inches of horn to grow in 4/5 years! He was running with a similar sized animal, but it's horns weren't as symmetrical.
I understand mouflon can be transplanted nearly anywhere (texas, hawaii, all over Europe) and are the ancestors of sheep, which explains why a non-hunter looked at this pic and ask me if the farmer got angry I shot a sheep!!

Boghossian,

Thats a fine looking beast you have!

Would love to get a crack at a beast like that one day! I never knew they were taken from highseats though..I always thought it involved treking to the high mountain tops?

Regards

Pete

Hi,
How did you get the picture here? Is it just a matter of copy/pasting?
The area was hilly and had been forested for commercial purposes. In each valley there was a clearing with a high seat or two. When stalking, a lot of walking was needed, but it seems that I saw all the biggest ones from the stands...
All in all I saw maybe two dozen mouflon, the same amount of red deer, a handful of roe deer and a hare! We also bought a magnificent set of sed red deer antlers with 14 points, and are thinking of returning for a red deer this september!

Boghossian,

To post the picture here (and most other similar forums) first it has to be saved online which, in this case you had already done.

Next bring up the pic on the picture library site concerned, & right click on your picture and then click "properties" that will give you the actual address of the picture which will be something like:
http://www.picstore.com/reddeer.jpg

Copy that address and come back onto the forum you want to display the pic on...
Type in [img] "address" [/img] writing your picture .jpg address in the middle...you need to use the square brackets and follow the format exactly..there should be no spaces in between those brackets. If every thing is correct, it should post!

Regards,

Pete

This is an excellent mouflon ram. Good mass, very good horn length with good symmetry and the heart-shaped look which is typical of pure blood mouflons. I shot the #1 mouflon for Records of Exotics in the 2000 recording period and yours is comparable to mine. Although not free-ranging as was yours I'm still very pleased with him.
Congratulations on a fine animal! [Wink]

Thanx for the praise, I look at the trophy thankfully every day.
I will be going to the same region in search of a red deer with my father in september, it will be my first roar hunt, and I am already excited!

I live in Hawaii, one of the places you mention they were transplanted. They are apparently very adaptable since more than a few in the Safari Club Record book has come from Hawaii.

Yours in a fantastic specimen.

Nice trophy Boggy,

Who organized the hunting?

Did you buy a rifle in Belgium or Luxemburg like you asked me before?

Have you been in Belgium with your parents?
Did you go to the CTM with Andre Mertens?
I was very busy in july working all the time and in august i took my holiday in Hungary were I shot my roebucks.

Hi,
I went to a gunshop "La maison du chasseur" and looked over the used guns with my father and we are prob going to stick with a CZ...
Most importantly I am getting ready for my first red deer hunt in CZ and am quite psyched.
I found this place through contacts in Czechia and its a great place, but the guides speak only german and czech [Frown] , which hardly matters when you see a huge male, but could be dicey when a so-so specimen shows up. The guide had a little hunting terms translation dictionary with him and it was quite funny waiting for 5 minutes to hear "favorable wind" [Big Grin]
