I'm there all weekend helping out Richard Dunham of Stalkers UK - call in and say hello. I've got my fingers crossed for the weather but the long range forecast isn't exactly brimming with optimism...

I am there on the Saturday - heading straight for gun makers row and leaving all forms of payment behind - I don't trust myself!

I shall be in Lithuania shooting boar, drinking vodka, trying out my new Harkila Lynx boots, drinking vodka, slapping mozzies, drinking more vodka, boar stalking in the dawn, breakfast bread beer, checking out hotels, eating smoked meat, drinking vodka, having a sauna, drinking beer, then vodka, going into the forest to shoot boar, drinking beer/vodka and gralloching and jointing boar, slapping more mosquitos, sleeping in a high seat and waking up just in time to see boar leaving......the usual stuff.

So I won't be at the Game Fair, except in spirits!

Lithuania was great, although not what I expected. No vodka for one thing...too hot, beer was better.
The Boar were out in the huge wheatfields causing major damage. It was a long stalk from the forest edge to that small bush in the middle of the field, following a tractor wheel furrow. Then playing "Grandmothers Footsteps" crouching forwards and stopping every time a boar lifted its head.

Finally I got close enough to go for a head shot at about 75M You couldn't see enough of the body to confidently go for a boiler room shot without hitting a few wheat stems and possibly deflecting. Eventually it clocked me so a head shot was the only one on offer and quickly taken. 180g Barnes TTSX.

It went in just over the eye but came out in the middle behind and it dropped on the spot.

Many thanks to Saulius for taking the pictures and for putting me up and arranging the hunting.
The first picture gives you some idea of the size of the field. I'm the one on the left in the distance, the other two guys are foresters coming to help haul the carcase out. The second one shows the height of the wheat.
A few people have asked me about arranging trips out there but its not really what I do.
However, Kiri is in contact with Saulius and it should be possible to book something through Athina later on in the year if you are interested.

Kiri,
I think that they only got a limited allocation of medal quality stags this year so you might not get one.
They don't have any restriction on Boar numbers though so there shouldn't be any problem with them.
Winter is the best time, especially with the combination of snow and a full moon.
You don't get any Mozzies, Horse Flies or Keds then either.
My cull score for the weekend was as follows:
Keds 5 - 0 to me
Horse Flies 17- 7 to me
Mozzies 127- 15 to me
Sunday night was the worse, not a breath of wind and very humid. The mozzies arrived slowly at first but then in squadrons.
To compensate, the mushroom hunting was good and we found patches of Chanterelles and Boletus which made good eating along with the barbecued boar neck.

Dave, congratulation with the boar!
How did the new Harkilas work out?

I´m in the marked for a new pair of boots, and if their boots hold the same high quality as their hunting clothes, Harkila might be an option.

Arild, the New Harkilas are noticeably light in weight and its like going hunting wearing trainers which is quite pleasant.
There is also a good deal of "feel" through the sole which helps when you are trying to move quietly stalking up on a quarry.
I bought the lower version of the two styles but it was fine for the boggy bits and puddles in the Lithuanian forest and didn't let water in. The goretex does breathe but on a hot day, not enough to cool the soles of your feet. It is entirely waterproof though.
Reasonably comfortable for wearing all day although I found the lack of a heel section took time for my feet to get used to. It has a flat sole right through.
If I have a grumble, its the design of the lacing tensioning. In common with most boots its a pain trying to achieve a seperate tension to the forefoot and the ankle. It ought to be possible to lock one section off surely?
On balance though, a good buy so far and a nice lightweight alternative to my leather Buckendens.
They might not be so good in mud since the tread is not as pronounced as the Vibrams. Perhaps having more sole feel is the trade-off?
If they last as long and put up with as much abuse as the Musto Buckendens I'll be a happy bunny!
