Thank you mate!
I'm not personally hit by this tradegy, but really shocked that this might happen in our little country. I really hope this doesn't change the democratic and open society as we know it.

My thoughts goes to all involved!
And I hope that other norwegian AR-members and their families are ok.

Unbelievable what that happened at Utøya and Oslo yesterday. Still in shock, although none of my closest friends and family are touched by this tragedy! More than 90 perished so far most of them youths 15-25 years old. Many still missing.

My thoughts are with the relatives, those touched by this tragic happening.

The liberals here in the US believe that the Second Amendment to the US Consititution causes horrible events such as this.
Did you folks borrow our Second Amendment?

My prayers are with your nation.

It is hard to know what to say or how to deal with a tragedy of such proportions. I guess the best we can offer is to suffer and pray with the Norwegian nation.

I missed this when it happened but deeply saddend to hear of it and entirely fail to follow the logic of why he thought it was necessary and what it was meant to achieve.

It sounds like a joke, but here in good old germany, is started a new discussion about a total gun ban, especial for big bore handguns and semi-auto rifles, to prevent such terrible acts. The the governement will also start a kind of "patriot act". Every telecommunication should be saved and analysed. Same should be with E-mails and websites, blogs or any other kind of communication. Special "danger" people, like nazi´s or "legal gun owners" must be observed. We will back to the GDR 2.0. Roll Eyes

I wonder what the consequnces of this tragedy is going to be on gun owners in Norway (and in the rest of Scandinavia or even Europe)??

If experience from further south (UK, Germany) is anything to go by, then any such tragic shooting spree will inevitably lead to stricter rules or even outright bans on gun ownership.

Fortunately, Norway has a great and long lasting hunting tradition. I wonder if this will be enough to withstand the inevitable calls for a "risk free" society?

As tragic as this entire thing is, judging from what was published in the press, it also illustrates the futility of expecting the police to be able to protect regular citizens. Mostly, the police is there to mob up after the incident and write the report. This not to be taken as a criticism of the police, but simply acknowleding the fact that they can't (and shouldn't) be everywhere all the time in our free societies.

What kind of effect this tradegy will have on gun ownership is difficult to say. But I think and hope it won't be much. Like you say Mike our hunting traditions are solid and long lasting. At least for regular hunting weapons I don't think the changes will be dramatic. What will happen with gun ownership of handguns and more military style weapons is more difficult to say.

This weekend there's a big soccer gathering/competition in Oslo with youths from across the country. The police says they will not increase the security. Which imho is a good sign!

I will also add that it was better for our society that this terrible act was by a norwegian than by for instace an islamic terror group. Please do not misunderstand me. This is a great tradegy however one sees it. But the effects on our society in the future would have been even worse, I think. Now we're holding together regardless of cultural or religious background.

On the surface the argument above is kind of backwards, but I hear what you are saying.

Just after the bomb went off, everybody (the press) was expecting a Jihadi plot - as we had to live through the tragedies of New York, Madrid and London in years past.

As it turned out, and as tragic as the event was, at least we can't blame this one on Islamo-Facism, but have to search our souls about issues much closer to home. Xenophobia is probably present in all countries, but from time to time we need to be reminded how dangerous this can be.

In my opinion I feel the politicians are tired of playing that political card (ie the gun control card).

Also I feel the general public (generally speaking) has an acceptance that you cannot legislate against a motivated body intent on carrying out such acts.

I don't mean to sound complacent here but for example I cannot see what further restrictions we in the UK could have placed on us for legitimate use of firearms which are available on license. We have had a semi auto rifle ban and then a handgun ban all borne out of mass shootings

The last one hasn't yielded any significant further restriction and I doubt it will.

The only practical measure here in the UK to take matters further would be to ban any firearm full stop and I just can't see that personally.

With regard to the Norwegians I feel the underlying sentiment is that it will not be acceptable to bend or succumb to anything which would change the democratic standing as it is. Perhaps some minor detail but I would say no change in real terms if I was to place a bet due to the seriousness and the motivation (being political etc) of this latest act of mindlessness.

Purely my opinion.

Hmmm....
I got my fourth handgun ( was a gift) this year, after writing application forms for a half year. Roll Eyes
But I canceled the dillon I ordered. I´m realistic, we will get a handgun ban in the next two or three years, so my intension was, this investment will not profitabel, for the future. Frowner

Yesterday I heard, that the EU will have new regulations for selling chemical stuff, which can used for building bombs. And especial new regulations, for selling guns to private people. I´m wonder......
