I have a client in Norway that just suppressed his Blaser R93 in 6,5x55 SE for shooting at the range and for Roe Deer stalking Does anyone else use a sound moderator or suppressor? I have been looking at one for sometime now for my .308 R 93

hi aleko
i use a REFLEXsound moderator on my sako 22.250 it reduces the noise level down to the equivalent of a 22 lr with hv ammo be careful if you fit one to a non stainless barrel take care because they will rot your barrel very quiockly if you dont clean if you have a REFLEX MODERATOR [over barrel fitting]grease the outside of the barrel where the mod fits over, they also reduce the recoil substantially,if you zero with moderator on then shoot without your shots can impact as much as 6 inches high!

Aleko,

I recently shot to check zero with a friend who had just had a moderator fitted to his rifle, it was the type that screw onto the muzzle and return back over the barrel, down to the stock (reflex type).

We were both shooting .243, and yes, his was quieter that mine, but was not as silent as some would have you believe. and the trade off is that you have 50mm dia x 300mm (very approx) of stainless steel screwed onto your barrel and your rifle now handles like a rock! You can buy neoprene sleeves to put on to kill the glare and to quieten the tinggy noise that some report. But I don't think that I'll be rushing off to get one.

Regards,
ShooterBob.

i was a slow convert to suppressors, as they ruin the look and handling of a rifle.
i had my 243 threaded earlier this year, and bought a 2nd hand T8 reflex from a friend.
(he"s gone for a PES stainless suppressor)
i"m pleased with the results from my rifle, but it"s not the "magic pill" that some claim it to be. i only stalk deer now for recreation,
and will not be shooting more than one deer at a time, so i don"t intend to use it for stalking unless a specific application arises.
you will need to zero your rifle with and without the suppressor if you intend to use it with and without. it seems that a heavier more rigid barrel is less affectd by a supressor, but you will lose some accuracy. my 243 shoots about 2"/50mm higher at 100 mtrs with the suppressor. that"s not really prohibitive for heart lung shots on deer, but for anything more i"d feel uncomfortable with it on.
on the other hand, i"m just about to go out calling foxes this afternoon, and i will be using the suppressor.(and no ear defenders!)
as for corrosion, a steel suppressor needs to be cleaned and oiled after use, and DO NOT LEAVE IT FITTED TO THE RIFLE FOR STORAGE!
if you feel that you have a use for it, then yes, they have their advantages. i bought a threaded barrel cap which i use to protect the barrel thread, so you don"t neccessarily have to use it all the time if you do buy one.
good shooting, whatever you decide on.

I have looked at the tread on style. The weight is an issue, but in my research the weight does not mean more efficient noise reduction. I hane looked at a 20 oz suppressor already. I was planning on shooting conventional ammunition through it. But I am torn on which barrel to thread first the 308 or 6,5

Aleko.

As some have mentioned, handling deteriorates, and corrosion can often affect a barrel if not cleaned promptly after rounds are fired through a moderator.

On the plus side...recoil is reduced by at least thirty percent by my shoulder and I find group size tends to shrink. Probably a reflection of making the barrel stiffer I guess!

Interesting point here in the UK. Yesterday, I went to the range for a shoot with some fellow stalkers. Five years ago, I would have been a curiosity and the only firer on the line using a moderated rifle. Yesterday, nine out of ten shooters were using a moderator!

Rgds Ian.

Hi all,
I originally had a reflex fitted on my 25, but converted to a JetZ. The difference is like chalk and cheese, the JetZ is significantly quieter and is only two thirds the weight of the reflex, there is also the "ting" factor with the reflex which the JetZ does not suffer from. Being involved in the BASC stalking scheme I get to evaluate the efectiveness of most of the suppressors that are currently available, for quietness and quality of build the JetZ gets my vote..

Well, I reckon a reflex moderator to be an excellent investment but you do need to shorten the barrel to 16/17 inches prior to threading. Also involved me in shortening the forestock by3 inches.
Without this shortening they are unwieldy and mess up the balance and handling and carry comfort of the rifle. So unless you habitually shoot in a bipod situation and have a ghillie to carry your rifle lop 5 inches off.

i have a large LEI can fitted to my .22/250 ackley, and with a 26inch barrel makes it completely useless for anything apart from out of vehicle shots. But it is incredibly quiet and very very accurte.

My 243ackley has a PES on it (reflex type), this has greatly increased user comfort, and does seem a lot quiter from my end. I have seen masses of t4' and t8's rot out but have no problem with my stainless PES, i just put it in the dish washer to clean it occasionaly. In fact i like it so much i allready have one waiting for the 7mmremmag. If sako ever deliver it.

Smiler Know what you mean about the length of the LEI - guess who has had a 14 inch barrel on his .270 for the last five years or so!! Wink

I don't dare take it out without the mod on nowadays - it scares children!!

I an ex user of the pre reflex type (mine was a vaime on an 18" barreled Tikka 243)

I found that the handling and bulk outweighed the noise reduction. I didn't shoot any more multiples and lost out on aware deer that didn't like seeing the coke bottle sized moderator being slowly raised toward them (it's a lot more visual bulk)

A pair of electronic ear plugs works on all rifles. The public disturbance issue is much less than you would imagine. Very few people can place a single shot from an unmoderated rifle.

Just reading this post, I use a T8, for park shooting and at night on a .243, love it.
For foot stalking take an unmoderated 7mm-08, just nice to have a light rifle in hand after one with a can on!
Griff what is a JetZ, not heard of these, prices, length etc?

Yes - I chrono all my loads and rifles. The .270 is loaded DOWN to 2255fps. Trajectory like a golf ball, hardly any noise and NO recoil - but zeroed 1.5" high gives easily doable Roe and fox shooting out to 230 yds. That's more than enough for the grounds I cover down here.

Usefully, first zero is about 25yds - so precise neck shooting is no problem in tight cover - out to @ my self imposed 50yd limit for those shots.

If I anticipate shooting at greater ranges, I have other rifles that allow me to stretch out MUCH further. Down here in the SW we have small banked fields that tend to limit your visibility and shot distance...... besides, stalking close is where the fun is"! Smiler

Has to be said - a sporting rifle with a 14" barrel just looks plain wrong!

Keep well.

Ian

I have ordered 2 sound suppressors one for my .222 the other is a 30 cal. Weith is about 22 oz and overall length is about 10" for the 30 cal. I was planning on shooting the lapua trainer ammo out of the .308 for starters. I should have them both this autumn somtime
