Without having seen any statistics to prove it, here in Norway the most common caliburs are .308Win and 30-06.

.308Win became popular mainly due to "free" ammo from the military. I don't actually know many people that still use 6,5x55, as most have switched to bigger caliburs many years ago.

The three cartriges that have seen military service i Norway are also the most popular.
An atricle in a hunting magazine covered this som time ago. I remember the three most popular:

1 30-06 is the most sold today (used in the military from after ww2 to about 1967)
2 308 still our standard military service round!
3 6,5x55 the old union cartrigde of "The United Kingdom of Norway and Sweden". (one hundred years since the union ended this year!)

After these I know the 9,3x62 and also the 300WinMag are very popular.

Not scientific polling data, just observations: .30-06 overwhelming favorite in both Finland and Sweden, with .308 making a strong showing. Younger shooters ocassionally lik ethe .300 Win Mag in Finland, some Swedes used the 9.3mm (mostly 62's, but a few 74's). In all of the many, many months I spent in both countries, I have yet to meet a hunter who uses a 6.5x55. The Swedes told me it is "an old man's cartridge-you know, for those who won't change and are too cheap!"

My club in Varmland has about 25 members who shoot in descending order of popularity:-

6.5x55 probably about 60%
308win 20% or so
9.3x62 2 of (of which one is mine)
7 rem mag x1
358 norma mag x1 comes out when one 6.5x55 owner gets to the last day and is less fussy with shot angles
458 win mag x1 downloaded
not aware of any 30-06s

The 7mm is owned by the oldest member of the club, the 2 youngest own 6.5x55s....

Around here hunters use mostly:

.308
.30-06
8x57IS
9,3x62
the odd 7,62x53R, 8,2x53R and 9,3x53R

Not many 6,5x55, as they were not allowed for scandinavian moose in this country until ten years ago.

Curious, is the 9.3x63 based off of the Swedish 8x63 or is it simply a .30-06 necked up?

Where I hunt, (Västerbotten, northern Sweden), most members of our team use either the .30-06 or the 6,5x55. Only one hunter in our team has a different calibre, and that´s the .308.

Can´t say we experince any difference in effect, it depends most on where you hit them. Then again I´ve only seen about 30 Mooses killed.... Smiler

I would say .308 is in it's own class in Finland, followed closely by the .30-06. The third might be .222 Rem. or still the 7,62x53R, if measured by the number of registered guns. The 7,62x53R:s aren't having so much use anymore, since there are a lot of better guns for other calibers available. The 9,3x62 has been growing it's popularity among larger game hunters a lot, and of course there is the .22 LR, which might be most popular of all, but not regarded as a "real" rifle caliber in Finland.

The 308 Win and 30-06 rules in my neighbourhood.
Mostly red and roe country.

In my moose camp up north, the picture is slightly different. We have among us, 308 Win, 6,5-06, 7mm Remmag, 338 Winmag, 35 Whelen and 375 H&H. The 308 belongs to a 68 year old lady Smiler, the rest of the guns says that we are a little more interested in guns than the average I guess
