Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you use this cartridge and if so on what? Please share your experiences.

I just acquired a Savage 99 in 22 HP and would like to figure out what range of game it is suitable for.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I don't use this cartridge but have a number of hunting Buddies that do.

Either the primary rifle cartridge in a Drilling or Combo Rifle or Insert Barrels in the same.

It has a solid following here in The Fatherland as a Roe Deer, Fox, Marmot, Badger & other Vermin cartridge. It is not legal here for "Large" Game.

I don't know anyone of the above mentioned who reload for this cartridge - always factory ammo; mostly the premium Norma or RWS.

Have Fun with your new Savage.

Cheers,

Number 10

Our very own StuC should have one of those - in a Savage 99.

Mike,
Did you buy that gun on Gunbroker? If you did, it looked like a nice little piece.

I shoot 22 Savage Hi Power in my drilling. Its a 20 gauge with the rifle barrel under. Its a great varmint cartridge and out to 200 yds just about the same as a 223 50 grain SP as far as energy goes. I have shot both Sellier and Bellot and Norma cartridges. Norma brass is much better. Great gun for birds and for the occasional coyote that the dogs scare up. You'd be surprised how often you can stop a coyote with a distress call long enough to get a shot.

I figure I'll use it mostly on some prarie dogs, rabbit, and coyotes but I suspect it would do a fine job on the deer I grew up shooting.

JonP,

No, I saw one that looked similar on GB but I got mine locally. Traded a Mauser 1895 Chileno carbine for it.

Here's a pic. It came with Stith mounts and a Weaver 330 scope. Optics are crystal clear.

I'm assembling the necessaries to start loading for it. Hopefully I'll be shooting it real soon.

Mike,
That's a really sweet looking 1899H. Looks to be in very nice condition too. And with the stith mounts and scope, well... you did good.

I have a later version of the same rifle, but mine's in nothing like original condition - d&t, re-blue etc. Still there aren't a lot of these outside the US so I was happy to get one. Gotta love the Savage 99.

I've only shot paper with mine. Maybe one day it will see blood again.

cheers,
stu

Doesn´t that round shot .227 bullets?

IN sweden we have so-so access to those and cahches of good bullets are closely guarded.

Well regardless Stu, great rifle, tru history.

Best regards Chris

Yes it does...I believe the nominal bore is .228. Could be wrong but wasn't this cartridge necked down from the 25-35 Winchester (in Europe its the 6.5 x 52R)? This little cartridge is devastating on predators.

Here's my "Niederwilddrilling" (small game drilling). Built on an alloy frame..weighs 6lb 9oz without the scope

JonP, Nice drilling, very nice!

Yes the bullet diameter is .227". Hornady is the only maker of readily available projectiles and they're pretty easy to come by and cheap. However, they seem to be geared towrds the 5,6x52R which usually has a 1 in 10" twist. The Savage has a 1 in 12" and doesn't stabilze the bullet. I have a trim die on the way which will allow me to remove the tip so as to shorten the projectile.

Stu,

Hope you get to use yours in the field soon. I already want another, lol. I'm keeping my eye peeled for one that's not so nice so I can rebarel with a .224" barrel and restock.
