Can anyone give me a short description of what is involved for me to bring my rifle over to stalk in the UK. I will be travelling from Norway and have the EU firearms pass. Also what does my host need to do as regards temporary firearms permits etc. Any travelling tips/experiences would also be welcome.Thanks Toby | ||

This is the paper work we had to fill out when we needed temporary UK firearms licences last February. It should give you an idea of what is needed. On top of this, somebody (the estate owner, say) needs to file this with the authority responsible. The UK guys will be able to provide more information on this detail.

Toby Very easy. Bring a rifle of at least .240 calibre if you wish to hunt Deer in the UK. Rifle (ideally with bolt removed, Binoculars, knife and any heavy kit in a hard gun case. Ammunition packed in original packaging or plastic MTM type case in your checked baggage. Your host puts an application for a 'Visitors Firearms Permit' into his local police office. He will need to include your EFP, as well as details of the dates you will be visiting, firearms and ammunition you will bring. The permit will be produced and returned to your host, who will then send it onto yourself. This process takes some time - ensure you let your host have your EFP at least 12 weeks before your intended visit. Arrive at the UK airport, collect your baggage and rifle, enter the Red channel through customs where the rifle will be inspected to ensure your permit is correct. Pass through and enjoy hunting in England. PM me if you have any specific questions, I quite frequently host Norwegian friends & have encountered most of the issues. Exactly what Ian said but remember that the ammo also needs to be in a lockable container. That may well be your suitcaase if it has a lock on it otherwise you will need a small lockable case which you can then put in your suitcase. The process is very easy and coming through the airport with the permit in hand is (usually...) a straightforward process. They check the numbers on the gun and permit and send you on your way. Its worth contacting the airline and telling them that you wish to travel with firearms. They may give you specific check-in instructions. At Gatwick, for instance, a member of the baggage handling staff had to come to the check in desk to collect firearms and escort them to the plane. If you put your ammo in your suitcase, make sure that you tell them at check in. Both firearms and case should be tagged and you may have to collect them from the airline representative rather than the baggage carousel. At customs, they aren't all familiar with firearms and it helps if you show them where the serial numbers are.  Hope this helps. Always tell airline you are carrying a "sporting firearm" when you book your ticket.
