Hi

I'll be visiting the UK for the last 2 weeks of Jan to help my Mum pack my Grandmothers house up as she has had to go into an old age home. I will be pretty busy I think but I may be able to have a couple of days off here and there and was wondering what suggestions you guys would have about what things/places (Hunting and rifle related of course) I should see and visit?

I will be staying in a little village called Hannington.

Thanks heaps.

A day out with either foxhounds or beagles would be good & cost next to nothing.

Maybe a visit to H & H in London.

Hey GG,

Which Hannington are you staying at? There were a few when I looked on Streetmap.com.

Either way, It should be possible for you to get a day out stalking or prhaps just a morning. Does are in now, so a roe should be on the cards, as are sika/red hinds. In the bucks, Fallow and Muntjac are in season. You can use an estate rifle, and if you shoot a decent grouping on paper then most guids will be happy to take you out.

Theres plenty to do in the UK but it really depends where you will be staying...tell us the county or the nearest big town and it will help

It's the Hannington not too far from Basingstoke. And I will have a car at my disposal for at least 1 of the 2 weeks. Thanks for your suggestions so far.

FB - A crack at your namesake would be the go. What sort of $$ do you think I would have to pay for a day out hunting for a Fallow Stag?

GG,

See if your relatives there can drum up a shooting sports "pen pal" for you right now. And then converse with that person and see if they will take you around and show you the country. There is nothing like riding along anywhere in the UK and have someone narrate the history of the area and the present as well.

Can you give us some idea where those towns are? England?, Wales? ?, and near what city?

I would go out for a days driven pheasant shooting if it was me. I enjoyed that even though the birds all flew in a straight line.

There are some cheaper shoots if you look hard enough (there were anyway when I was there).

Try for some roe buck hunting too, especially in the North. Two or three days should get you one at least.

If you have a car and can use it for a week, anywhere in England is in easy reach. It is a small place. The highways can get very very clogged though on public holidays.

Try and get hold of a English hunting mag. They often have lots of adverts but are often overpriced.

Try swapping a hunt!

But you haven't got much time before January is here

GG,

I used to live near there in Reading. There is some good stalking to be had in the area. The region has a lot of muntjac, and a some decent numbers of fallow. Both of which you can shoot bucks through jan and feb. There are some roe about to so a doe may show up.

Expect to pay $100sterling for a day out with no guarentees. This is typically out for a doe or a cull buck, anything with a bigger hat rack will be charged extra.

I'm in Cyprus at the moment, but could post some numbers for you when I get back next week. BTW, the pheasants would be a good idea but it is easier to go stalking and borrow a rifle from the estate than it is to go shoot pheasants and borrow a shotgun. You may get lucky though.

Email me with dates and details of time off - I have a friend coming in from Norway about then - but should be able to sort out something for you!
