I shoot about 10-15 each roe rut that respond to my Buttalo. I only use it in the roe rut as a lot of my muntjac stalking is co-located in my roe stalking and I don't want to educate the roe.

It is very effective. I have a suspicion that it works year round as I have accidentaly called (and let walk away!) a couple of muntjac when calling for foxes with a butalo at night with a lamp.

It is great fun. They can come from any angle and generaly don't hang about. Sometimes it just gets them moving enough to become aware of others in the vicinity and get into territorial bark mode which can be fun to try to stalk.

Oh and I think the does tend to respond to fawn calls which might need care due to the potential for a dependant fawn being orphaned.

Thank you,

Just picked up a nice little block for muntjac and red on the way into work. Its great sitting at a desk remembering the early morning stalk, and looking forward to eating the beast in teh boot. The brilliant thing is working as a land agent, its not frowned upon.

I have dug out the call and will give it a try on friday morning, as going duck shooting before work the next two days.

Interesting. 90% of my stalking is on the way to or from work. The morning works particularly well as I get to do the commute in half the time early on, stalk for a couple of hours and then go in. No-one at work has a clue that there's a beast in the boot or a dog in the passenger footwell.

In summer you will have to sort out alternative storage for the carcass or it will be ruined. I hang mine in a barn in a fly net but am searching for a drinks cabinet chiller. I find that even 6 hours in the shade radicaly reduces the storage time in my chiller.

This all sounds very interesting and I wasn't aware that Muntjac would respond to a butalo call.

Can anyone give me more specific information as to how to use the call for Munties (ie frequency of call etc).

Any help would be appreciated.

Use it exactly as you would for roe. I don't think the 'rape' call works on them though.
