Are there any other forum users, that will be going to the Isle of Arran in the last week of September?
I understand that Griff will be going, as a ranger. It would be nice to make contact with all involved before the event, as I can see that we will have our work cut out once on the Island.

Have a great time - it looks like it could be a lot of fun! Something I'm looking forward to doing one day in the future.

Full report please Puntgunner - could be the ideal AR get together!

Last week was the first Arran outing kicking off in fine style with a 10 point 3year old weighing in at 103kg.
The Arran weather then closed in with torrential rain, stags were seen albeit briefly..
Later in the week a small spiker was shot in amongst the rain fog and sunshine. The Notorius Scottish midge was present and was unbearable at times so repellent was used in copius amounts.
There were several Large stags seen, but due to inexperience and bad luck of some of the stalkers most are still roaming freely. The rut had not started with stags still in small groups, some roaring was heard from the hill stags but the woodland beasties remained quiet..
This next outing should see the rut in full swing...
Lets hope....

Puntgunner here. Sorry to have dragged my heals in getting a report in. It takes longer than you think to get a weeks worth of stalking equipment dry again!
When i have enough time to do the job justice, I will sit down and compile the report. It will, hopefully, make entertaining reading.

Here's a brief report on the BASC Arran stalking scheme.
31 stags in the larder! A stalk to remember was Keith's 14 pointer, with roaring from both parties it eventually showed itself and was soon on its way to the larder, and weighed in at 132kg clean..
There were several 12/13 pointers shot for the week, as well as a few spikers.
As the weeks progress, and the stalkers get to know their beats, then stags start to enter the larder.
Each of the weeks has been dogged by bad weather; rain and low cloud put paid to about 30% of the stalking.
With plenty of hinds being seen, we are hoping, weather permitting, that the hind cull gets off to a flier..

I have sent photos to pete-e who is going to post them for me...

regards

griff

Griff and co. it looks as if this BASC venture has got off to a good start. Congratulations to all involved.
When it gets "written up" in the BASC magazine they'll get swamped with enquiries and will end up doubling the price!! Unless FE agrees to allow BASC involvment on other forests.

It allready has been written up(July issue?). Despite lots of enquiries the stags were under subscribed allthough the does are fully booked.

I really really enjoyed it but make no mistake it is tough physicaly and weather wise and is not classic open hill stalking but forestry blocks with adjacent open stalking.
