Maybe a silly question, I don't know ... but what is this and how does it work??

It's referred to as both a "bore guide" (kinda know what THAT is) and a "muzzle guard"

If one cleans from the muzzle end of the barrel it is only natural that they will drag the cleaning rod to one side or the another. It must be fairly consistent over time because soon one side of the barrel will show noticable wear (damage).

If one uses a bore guide (from either end) properly and consistently along with a clean cleaning rod the wear is reduced and accuracy is maintained!
