California coyote hunting

Once again, the prospect looms that my company will transfer me to the People's Republic of California. Aside from registering my guns and turning in all my large magazines, is this also the end of my hunting career?

I am trying to see a bright spot in all this. I lived out there for 3 years a while back, and I don't remember anybody much liking coyotes, mostly because so many have had their outdoor cats and small dogs eaten.

I don't guess there is any shortage of coyotes today. Anyone know about prospects for shooting them?

They are still out here in the high dessert of southern Ussrfornia. Where out here are you going. Maybe we will be able to hook up for a good hunt. I seen 8 tonight while shooting on the local range. Too bad I only had my .22lr pistol. I will know better next time. Let me know.

My condolences, work keeps me here in Communifornia also. One thing you have to remember is that if you have any black guns (guns listed by the CA attorney General as "Assault Weapons") you cannot bring them into the state at all. (as well as any magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds). Many people keep storage units in Nevada and Oregon to store extra items that they don't want to bring into the state.

Edited for spelling

Wait a minute now. I was kidding about that gun registration stuff. Am I going to have to declare what I have? Register it? I've got friends in AZ that could hold on to certain items, but I might as well sell it if I'm rarely ever going to see it. How about plain Jane semiautomatic handguns? How about old military Garands? Did you all have to turn in your high-cap magazines, or are existing CA magazines and "assault rifles" grandfathered?

Henry, NO Joke. If your firearms are listed on the California Attorney generals list (Check this link) http://www.uh.edu/~dbarclay/rm/roberti.htm then you cannot bring them into the state. They had to be registered back in 1990 or so and remain continuously in the state to be legal here. Someone moving into the state now cannot bring any of these firearms into the state with them. You also cannot bring or purchase any new Class 3 (Automatic, real assault) weapons.
Any other firearms (not class 3, or not on the list), plain Jane semi auto pistols, Garands, etc. are not restricted, nor are there any special state registrations required when you move here.

DISCLAIMER: I am not an attorney, and this is not legal advice. The above statements are not made with any intention of absolving anyone from knowing the laws of the state that they are subject too.

I grew up in southern California, but live in Illinois now. Great pig hunting, lots of ground squirrels, ok dove and deer hunting. A lot, as usual depends on having access to land.

Check out Varmint Al's site for some specifics on coyote and ground squrrels:

www.varmintal.com

Not as bad as you might have thought (unless of course you have something on the banned list).

Good luck

The numbness of it all....

You cannot bring any 10 round mags in the state unless you were here and owned them before the law was erected....

Make sure you can prove it... Like others have posted, read the law...

It is a sad day my friend...

You know, Hitler started gun control.. Then he came in to your home and slaughtered you..

History repeats itself...

A newcomer is required to register all handguns with the state DOJ within 60 days of moving here. Sad but true. Also check to see that nothing you're bringing is prohibited; they're on a mission with no sense of humor. Same disclaimer about legal advice; check the state's web sites to see that nothing new has made it worse...

Well, sadly the other guys are correct about all the political and legal bullshit in this state.

However, in regard to coyotes, we still have plenty. My dad and I recently killed 19 off of one ranch in a weeks time.

So, as bad as living in California is, we do have pretty good hunting for such things as coyotes and wild hogs. This summer my dad and I collected 15 wild hogs, and we are currently giving the coyotes a hard time.

We have plenty of coyotes . California is a large area , so when it comes to prospects , I feel it's wide open .
If it were up to me bring whatever guns you like , just dont point them at me .

Not hardly Henry, you'll find more hunting and fishing opportunities here in CA than you have in WV. In fact, more than about any state, it's honestly why I stay here. It'll really depend on where in CA you end up. This state is 1100 miles long and 250 miles wide and a large percentage of that is public land (USFS & BLM).

In reply to Snorkel Bob, I am hunting just wherever I get the chance.

We have some very good coyote hunting out to the east of here near Riverdale. We also do very well on a couple of ranches in the foothills near Sanger. We also get a few off of a ranch that a friend owns near Mariposa.

In regards to the hogs, we are again just going all over. I hunted them this summer near Sanger, near Mariposa, and just out of San Miguel over on the coast range. The deal in San Miguel was a paid guided hunt, but worth every penny.

I hunted my butt off in the Sierra's this fall, saw lots of does and spikes, but did not see any legal bucks. (Except for a nice forked horn that I watched my buddy miss twice.) I just have been coming up dry in the Sierra's for deer. Killing lots of other stuff, but the deer are eluding me.
