The weekend safari was successful and also a bit frustrating but a GREAT TIME was had by all with the exception of some vermin. Friday started out about 3:30PM overlooking the long field in the bottom. First blood came courtesy of the 6mm testing the VORTX Viper for the first ime in the field at just 275 yards. Result was the BIG dead chuck in the photos. From there the shooting picked up and several were sniped at distances running in the 200-440 yard rannge, all with the 243 or the 6mm. Wind was a factor so the "little guys" stayed quiet until later. About 7PM we changed to the other side of the hill and the wind died completely. That's when the 17 Fireball came out and made 4 consecutive shots at 312,317,365 and 376 yards and then missed at 425 no doubt due to shooter error!! It was also where Bobby (photo shows him in shooting position) nailed the two longest shots at 526 and 531 yards. Near where he made those hits, I made one with the 6mm at 492. Then it was over to John's house(landowner and host) for a great sothern meal of fried chicken, tomatoes, potatoes and gravy and coleslaw. Saturday dawned bight and clear with a light breeze. First thing done was to play at John's bench shooting his "steel chuck" at 1061 yards. Chuckmusher talks of this in his post. It was gratifying to dial the VORTEX up 27.5MOA and smoke the target! Repeatedly! Then to the field. First varmint passed away at 520 yards on the first shot with the 6mm. Then there was a shot from the direction of the field where we were set up on! DAMMIT MAN!! There was another pair of hunters set up on that side hunting what was supposed to have been the site of the bulk of Saturdays shooting! So we moved. Back to the site of Friday's carnage. Action was slow as it was shot the day before and temprature was getting rather warm. So we left there and headed to the "honeyhole" farm where we are now up to 202 for the year. Bad news! Seems the owners daughter was getting a "new horse" yesterday so they wanted no shooting there for a week to ten days! I had 5 varmints so far and Chuckmusher was still at "0" for the day due to the fact that he had encountered a varmint at 450 yards at the other farm that obviously had a "force field" around him resulting in 3 misses from CM's 243!! CM did make the kill colum with a hellacious crow dusting though at 191 yards! (pictures also). Day ended by visiting other places we hunt with poor results.......grass too high......PEOPLE....no chucks! Ended on a good note though with me spotting a chuck in a field that we have not seen one in all year as we were leaving the last set up site. It was 210 yards and CM got him and turned him into buzzard bait!! Total vermin for the hunt was 22, lower than expected but a fun time afield! Thanks to Bob for posting the photos. A report on the Vortex will be done soon. GHD Groundhog Devastation(GHD) | ||
