Any of you boys use these???

I am getting ready to order a thousand or so...

But instead of ordering 250 of this weight, and 250 of that wt...
what do you guys have any experiences with??

it will be with a 223, so I was looking at the 42 grain HP or the 46 Grain HP...

Two of my other mainstays for sage rats are the 40 grain Sierra HP and the Speer 50 grain TNT/HP...

I have used the 52gr with great success in my 223, have to say they have some pretty impressive hits on prairie dogs. Can't remember the exact load, I'll see if I can dig it up.

I have not bought any Calhoon bullets, yet.

But I would suspect that their coating would work best if all the Copper is cleaned out of the barrel before starting to use the bullets.

That way, no coating would rub off on top of the Copper, which could then be even harder to get out.

quote:
"SLICK-SILVERTM" coating is electro chemically applied to the outside of the bullet to privide an ultra slippery bore lubricant which reduces fouling and makes barrel cleaning easier. Cleans with regular bore cleaners. Certech, suppliers of 5mm Remington conversions, has adopted "Slick-SilverTM" plating on their custom 30 and 36 grain 20 caliber bullets. All James Calhoon bullets are "Slick-SilverTM" plated.

Just a thought. Factory Win. loads with there 46 gr HP seem to shoot real well. I see they sell just the bullet as a stand alone at places like midway. Just looking at the cheap side again.

Life but a knife edge anyway.Sooner or later the man slips and gets cut.

GReg,
actually,I have about 2000 of them still unloaded and about 1200 of them loaded...

but the cost of the 46 grain Win HP is going up dramatically, even in ratio to some other bullets...

that is why I am shopping for some diffent alternatives...

Last time I ordered some 46 grain HP Winchesters, I paid $122.00 for 2000 of them, delivered on the doorstep...now that cost is 80% higher or more.. depending on source..

I've used the 42 gr calhoon. They work just fine. But my experiance is limited to a couple hundred. I'm down to around 2500 50gr tnt's. I would concider using more calhoons if the price is right. I've tried that bullit in a .223 and .22-250 on p-dogs and it did the trick. Groups were around 3/4". Thats on par with those 2 guns with most loads I have tried in them.
I know you like the blue dot loads. So I'm not sure how they are with slower velocities.

Sidewinder...

I have to admit, If I was down to only being able to use ONE 22 caliber varmint bullet, the choice would be the 50 grain TNT, hands down!

14.5 grains of Blue Dot, and a 50 grain TNT... are an awesome performer, and also accurate as hell...

I try a lot of 22 caliber bullets.. just to keep abreast and have multiple sources, as not to get stuck with being out of stock...

but just as Blue Dot is my 'go to' powder for 223s and sage rats..... I am always testing out a lot of other stuff.. which just solidifies my choice of Blue dot..

but now that the 46 grain HP WIN, is getting too spendy and the availability declining...It was my main go to varmint bullet for sage rats, because of price and performance...so I am shopping for a replacement...

but a stock of 50 grain TNT for the 223, and the Speer 52 grain HP for the 22.250, is always on hand on my load bench...

I remember all your blue dot posts a while back. I gather you like it...lol!
That 52gr speer hp shoots in every .224 I own.
I have to admit. I'm getting lazy at the bench. I have'nt left WA. in a few years, and almost all my shooting has been on rats because I have found some really good shooting at home. I have use the hmr almost exclusively for 3 years now. The other guns are tuned up, and ready. I have plenty of ammo. They get range time, but the pipes on um come home clean half the time cause I bring them...then don't shoot them. They last longer that way...
I'm getting the itch to travel. I had a 6br built for some longer range stuff. Its sportin a 36x tasco now, but the NSX is in the works. I just could'nt do it all at once. Jeeze...ya have to buy all kids of new crap with a gun like that. I'm really messed up now! Its got me babblin...........
I have'nt even looked at the price of bullits since last spring. Your scaring me! I figured the price of .17hmrs were going down, but I paid almost 9 bucks a box. I bought 10 cases of steel shot this year. I hear component are going to make a drastic jump by next year...but I sure hope its just a rumor.
Good luck with the calhoons!
