hey all, how effective is this round on varmits, like coyote's? how accurate are they? and how far out could it take a coyote with a good heart/lung shot? "Keep your stick on the ice"

Crow_waxer, The 7.62X39 was designed to be shot out of a SKS and later the AK-47, While the SKS and the AK-47 are designed to be combat rifles, they are good combat rifles they will never be considered tackdrivers. If you hit a coyote in the heart lung area with a good hunting bullet it will knock that coyote fizzle end up. The 7.62x39 has about the same tragectory as a 30-30, so your effective range will be shorter. If your going to be buying a gun spacifically for coyotes there are a lot of better choices out there. If you already have an SKS or an AK (there are other guns out there that will shoot this caliber)Practice your calling get them in close the SKS and AK will work and you will have to go a log way to find two guns that are more fun to shoot. Varmint hunting is purely for fun.....and if using a AK-47 is your style of fun, have a ball.....I like precision bolt action rifles for that game.....we all have our own character I guess!!

waxer: I have always had an interest in that round, but in a good bolt action. always looking for some of the Rugers that were made in that caliber, stainless steel with the Zytel stock. would wing the stock and put on a good Boyds JRS laminate stock. They also had a 308 bore. a 110 grain Sierra hollowpoint would be a fun round for coyotes. Heck in Oregon I know a guy who uses it for deer and it does an excellent job on these little black tail deer.

seafire, et al - I have the CZ 527 Carbine with 18 inch bbl in the 7.62X39 and it is really fun to shoot if you handload. In a new bolt rifle SAAMI specs are 50,000 CUP and 2600 fps is no problem for a 125 gr bullet with RX7 powder. It qualifies as a 150 yard deer load, but don't expect an exit wound. I have worked up a number of loads using .312 pistol bullets with Lil' gun and they are devastating varmint loads, incluing 100 gr XTPs at 2850 fps with the high spin rate. You can shoot them faster you might blow out the core and ring your bbl with the jacket. 110 gr Hornady spire points are tougher and shoot just as fast. My favorite and most accurate is the 55 gr hornady Vmax in a .308 sabot at 3450 fps pushed by Lil gun. If you tinker with COL and crimp sub MOA groups are obtainabe. The CZ 527 is a nice rifle with 5 rnd detachable mag, positive feeding and claw extractor. best feature is a single set adjustabe trigger. Scope mounts are milled into the receiver and it comes with rings. The short action cycles like lighting and feeding is excellent. They are a great deal at $450.
