Just for your edification.
quote:
Code of Virginia 3.1-796.116. Dogs killing, injuring or chasing livestock or poultry. It shall be the duty of any animal warden or other officer who may find a dog in the act of killing or injuring livestock or poultry to kill such dog forthwith whether such dog bears a tag or not. Any person finding a dog committing any of the depredations mentioned in this section shall have the right to kill such dog on sight as shall any owner of livestock or his agent finding a dog chasing livestock on land utilized by the livestock when the circumstances show that such chasing is harmful to the livestock. Any court shall have the power to order the animal warden or other officer to kill any dog known to be a confirmed livestock or poultry killer, and any dog killing poultry for the third time shall be considered a confirmed poultry killer. The court, through its contempt powers, may compel the owner, custodian, or harborer of the dog to produce the dog.
This only addresses the legal aspect of the subject and only in Virginia. I posted this because, despite numerous topics on the subject, I had not seen it posted before.

What a load of CRAP. Just what you need, some jerk with a problem shooting my coonhounds and using the excuse of livestock predation as an excuse. Here in MN we have the "right to retrieve" We can get our dogs on private property and leave. All we need is an excuse like this for some landowner on 3 acres with 5 chickens shooting our dogs because he has an excuse.IT HAPPENS!!!

When I lived on 5 acres in Snohomish County, I called the animal control officer supervisor, Mr Moody about a nieghbor's dog that kept killing my chickens.
He told me that if a dog harrasses livestock, including chickens, I had the right to shoot the dog, if it in an area legal to shoot guns. He warned me that the "legal right" was not to say I would ever get allong with the dog's owner again.

I talked it over with another nieghbor, an 80 year old man who still ran a one man saw mill, and he said that one should never warn a niegbor about thier dog. He said that the owner would not control the dog, and the nieghbor would be trouble later when the dog dissapeared. He claimed to have killed over 150 dogs on his trap line. He claimed to have shot his best friend's dog [the two old guys were right next door] that was chasing a chicken, and his friend is still looking for that dog.

I eventually found the way to deal with dogs, coyotes, and raccoons eating chickens is to have an electric fence around the chickens.

Ridgerunner,

You are absolutely correct. It does happen. It should also be noted that stock running hunting dogs are really quite rare. Any hunter worth his salt will either break the dog immediately or kill it himself.

It seems that here in Oklahoma killing someones hound or bird dog brings on considerably more bad luck than breaking a mirror. The offender's barns have a tendency to burn, their fences fall apart, their pond dams blow up and many other catastrophes befall them.
