Suppressor Question-223???

I have a RR Varminter that I was going to put a suppressor on, the problem is the rifle shoots so well that I do not want to alter it in any way.

I hunt ground hog's. I want to put a rifle together with a sound suppressor. I have no experience with a suppressor.

My idea is to build an MGM barrel for my Encore, then have a suppressor installed. I think I can get MGM to do the machine work, all I will have to do is screw on the suppressor.

Here is my question. What kind of velocity can I get, and still keep the rifle noise at a minimum??? What bullet do I want to shoot??? I would like to get as much range as I can, but still keep the noise level down. Has anyone played around with this??? Thanks, Tom.

Gary's Gun Shop in Sioux Falls sells supressors. The ranchers like them because they can use them close to cattle and not spook them with the noise of the shot.

With a 223 you'll have the sonic boom but reportedly it's not as noisy as the sonic boom plus the sound of the shot. I've been thinking of installing a supressor myself for use closer to cattle.

You know you'll need a class III license for this.

....and most states won't allow you to hunt with them.

You don't need a Class III. You just have to pay the $200 tax and get it approved by the local LEO's.

Legality is not an issue. I need some help on how to build a barrel. I would like to know where a subsonic 75 grain bullet would hit at 100 yards---when compared to a standard load 223 load(of any weight pill from 50 to 75).

Bob-I went to the link you post on your responses. I read some interesting thing's there about coyote calling. Which is something I want to learn how to do. Thanks, for the link. Tom.

Hi HEAD0001, i have a sound moderator or supressor on my cooper varminter .223 It shot very well before having my rifle threaded for the moderator and still shoots as good now i have had it done, moderators take out all the recoil and boom that you get without one, you will still get a "crack" from the bullet due to its speed but that will be all. They are a bit like shooting a 17hmr in terms of noise and recoil. I would not want to go back to shooting without one, as for your loads i just kept everything the same i shoot 75gr Amax through mine at 3000fps without any problems.

What is the twist on that Cooper??

3000fps with a 75 A-Max from a 223. That is smoking. What load did you use??

Where does your sub sonic load hit at 100 yards?? Tom.

The twist on my cooper is 1-9 barrel, it cost a bit more than standard but i wanted to be able to shoot heavier bullets if wanted, its is still throated the same as standard so 50gr bullets also shoot good.
I am using H4895 powder or varget but H4895 is my prefered choice with 75gr Amax, with the lighter bullets (50gr) H335 and varget are very good giving me 3300fps, both bullet weights will shoot in the .3s every day. The mod which i bought is made by ASE UTRA and is called a Jet-Z CQB they are very good and only puts about 10cm onto barrel length.

I've used George Vais in Boise Idaho at High Tech Gun Works 208-323-7674 for a couple of suppressors that I have. One is called the Universal and will work for .22LR and some duty on a .223. The other one is called the Auris and is specially designed for use on .223's including the full autos.

If I recall correctly the noise reduction on the .223 loads is 23db with the Universal and 37db with the Auris. The point of impact may changed with the suppressor on the barrel due to the harmonics of the barrel and adding the additional weight on the end of the gun. I found that I actually picked up about 30-40 fps of velocity with the suppressor on.

There is a big difference in the sound which is really cool and the recoil is also smaller. The interesting thing about using these cans on varmints is that one you don't have to deal with muffs while shooting and two the critters seem to have a hard time identifying the source of the crack if you should miss. Providing they don't see or get dirt splattered on them they will run at the sound but don't seem to know which way to run and I've actually missed a coyote and had him run at me!!!!

Currently you need an application filed out and signed off by your local law enforcement after a background check. This along with two copies of the blue line finger print card and $200 and a wait that seems now to be about 5-7 weeks and the seller will be sent your application back with the stamp attached to it and provide you then with the can. Good luck
