I'm planning a trip to Sundance, Wyoming which will have us driving through South Dakota. Any recommendations on a place to shoot prairie dogs? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

you'll be driving thru the black hills, take state road 44 down through interior and after you get out of the park and out of the no shooting area you'll find some towns. there's also some good towns around sundance

You don't mention which way you are coming. SO...

#1). Beware Black Footed Ferrets. There are areas closed to shooting. You get caught, Fed slam, fines confiscation... You won't be a happy camper, maybe in striped sunshine... Please don't.
#2). There is plague in the furballs. Don't handle the pieces. Leave for scavengers or bring biologists kit, flea powder, sealed containers, etc. They say antibiotics will cure it but why bother.

As said, you swing off the interstate and get south out of Badlands Nat. Park, you are in Buffalo Gap Nat. Grasslands and except for the ferret, it is wide open. Just to the east is the Pine Ridge Indian Rez. They have their own rules. You will need SD licenses. At the same time, if you are going to Wyo, why bother. Supposedly between Douglas and New Castle there was a p'dog town 26 miles in diameter. You could contact the BLM offices (Bureau of Land Mangement) in Douglas and ask. No license in Wyo last I knew. I wouldn't waste time in SD... but your call.

There is always VHA in Pierre, SD. Varmint hunter Assoc. They have magazine, parties, guides in the magazines, referrals... varminthunter.org I think. I have family on the border with Wyo and don't keep close track of them. Luck.

I shot for 4-5 years 20-30 miles west of sundance. Went back again last May, and the plague had wiped them out, all three places I had shot were almost devoid of PDs.

In case you missed it, there has been a drought in the plains for about 10 years now. Supposedly over... Weather??? You may hear of 1,000 round days per shooter. Long days. Not recently. Less grass/food. Fewer dogs. Unfortunately the ag types that raise livestock that eat grass think that killing all the p'dogs increases their supply of grass, may, and ask for poisoning, much... Not the best time. BUT if you make contacts now, and the drought is over as predicted, the population will explode and they may pay you to come and buy you ammo, well that may be a bit optimistic...

Thus my strong suggestion, in addition to finding the "no shoot" areas, to contact government agencies for disinterested advice on populations of p'dogs. The "guides" hate to tell the exact truth and lose business. Cannot blame them. Don't like it. Luck.
