GHD, I pillared, glassed and floated a Clark (Lothar-Walther) mid weight barrel .720 at the muzzel. Took the trigger down to about 19oz. Millet rings lapped with a Luepold VariX II 4-12. It shoots everything I feed it well, minute of tree squirrel to 100yards. For less effort, same money I could have got a Kimber, Anshultz or maybe a good used Cooper. My buddy has the Marlin. It will shoot right along with mine out of the box. I could have bought one of those and another center fire. Mosquito Creek is the big-un. There are several others around here. The fox hunts are a blast also, not near as much prize money but a good time. PA Yotes are almost impossible, Tight cover and deep hollows make reaching out with calls hard. They are down wind and gone before you see them. We have seen evidence of this more than once. Lots of pressure keep them pretty smart. Most are killed by deer hunters from a stand or with dogs. I called one into 35yards hunting with a bow for deer, no shot. One at night came in on a dead run as we got up to move, spooked at about 30 feet. We did not hear him coming until he was leaving. I got into a howling match with 2 that never came another night. That was on about 15 outing totaling over 100 sets. I hear them, I see them. I see their sign and tracks, but the are like hunting big foot sometimes. Luckily foxes keep us going. I want enough gun. I called every one that would listen from fur hunters to gunsmiths. 17 centerfires were top choices, 12 guage being first pick. I needed a gun that would not blow up a 8 pound gray fox at 10 feet but would be plenty for a yote at 100yards. I built a 17AH at the suggestions of more than one "expert". We will see this year. A 17 Javalina and a 20 Vartarg or Duster are also in planning stages I know I got off the topic a bit. AJ if you can use a centerfire and your shots are under 300 yards a 17Rem might be perfect. Lawdog hit it about right also nothing wrong with a Hornet, facotry loads are pretty easy to find and reloads are better for either. If I did a 22mag over again I would go the Marlin route as top pick. Not the prettiest but an ugly gun that makes small groups is still pretty attractive.

HF, "MOSQUITO CREEK" is the one I went to!! That's quite a club them boys up there have! I didn't get to shoot any coyotes but had a red fox absolutely scare the bejesus out of my hunting partner! It came in at a dead run and "jumped over" the LOHMAN caller sitting beside him......he didn't get to shoot!!! He was too busy trying to find some "striking paper"!!! Hope to get back up there again this coming year! Don't know yet though! GHD

LawDog Gary; I have cleanly killed two Coyotes with two shots (one apiece!) from my 17 HMR! I shot one in the head at 100 yards and the other in the lungs at 100 yards. I would use the 17 HMR on Coyotes at shorter ranges anytime the opportunity arises! Definitely the 17 HMR is not a 225 yard Coyoter but at the closer ranges it will and has been succesful for many people. Head or heart/lungs area only (avoid the shoulder blades) and bang away! There are way way way to many Coyotes out there! Harvest them with gusto! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
