Well, sometimes you never know! I was out doing some bowhunting for deer two weeks ago in one of my favorite spots in upstate NY. The area I was hunting really has to be hunted from the ground because there are so many branches that you lose all your shooting lanes from a treestand. I found a huge pine tree, cleared out the leaves all the way around and waited it out.

An hour after sunrise I see movement, check with my binoculars and see this coyote 70 yards out on a morning jaunt. She headed away from me, so I moved to the back side of the tree and pulled out my Verminator Tweety mouth call. I let her get a bit further into the woods and started calling. Took all of 5 seconds to see her reappear and headed my way. I got to full draw as she approached and I almost had to do something to stop her. She stopped on her own at 10 yards, looked like "I know I heard something over here", then turned broadside. That was it. The ole "Grim Reaper" broadhead did it's job. Had her on the stretcher that evening. Funny thing was that as I was finishing bowhunting that evening I caught a grey fox coming in to sniff her carcass!

Can't wait to get out the .223 and my FX3 caller, but you gotta take your opportunities when they come your way!

Eric,

Too Cool!

Great story & photos.

Yes, Siree, you Takes your Chances when they occur - I'm a firm believer in that one, too.....

.....and with a Bow! Wow!

PS - Tell us "the Rest of the Story" What happened with the sniffer Grey Fox?

Cheers,

Way cool . Good photo also .. I appreciate the time taken and the good story .. My last coyote and fox were targets of opportunity , taken with a 308 because that was what I had with me .... Did you have any success with deer for the rest of the day??

Thanks guys. No luck on the deer yet, but all of the hunts have been interesting. I never go on a hunt without a camera, as my chances of seeing something to take a picture of are usually about 100 times more likely than seeing somthing to shoot. I also never go without some mouth calls. The distress call for coyote/fox, turkey diaphragm calls for turkeys (if season is open) or as a confidence call for the deer.

The fox - yes, the fox. Well, as I was finishing up loading my truck I shined my very bright white flashlight into the woods. Only a few feet away from where I put the coyote carcass over the bank on the back of my property stood the grey fox. The one time I don't have a rifle in the truck and the fox just stands there. I went back to get my binoculars, came back around the truck and it still stayed there. I was surprised that it didn't seem too bothered by the white light, as a coyote would have been long gone after that.

I'm going back this weekend for deer (gun season is open). When I get back to the truck I'll swap out my deer rifle for my coyote/fox rifle, Foxpro FX3 and my Lightforce spotlight and call for the first hour or so after dark.

Really cool! It's funny that I too have walked right up on coyotes (70 yards) while elk hunting with a bow. Did some lip squeaks and got one closer but no shot. I lip squeaked a beautiful red fox in to 8 yards once as well but didn't shoot it. I was too amazed.

When he saw me move, he jumped straight up in the air, attacked an overhanging tree branch to show how tough he was and hauled ass!

It was hilarious and memorable.
