How often do you clean (number of shots) when out shooting P-Dogs? How thorough should it be and what is the best as well as fastest cleaning components? Does it hurt if you clean while the barrel is still warm?

Thanks

I clean when I start missing.
243 (58 grn V max) about 60 rounds.
22.250 (50 grn vax) it's around 100 rounds.
223 (50 grn SX) around 120 or a litle more.
17 HMR has gone over 250 shots (CCI).
308 every 40 -50 rounds (130 grain sp)

I clean them like I would at home. Repeated patches and brushes until clean. (I gotta try Wipe-out one of these days.)

I actually think that the guns clean easier when they are warm, not hot.

R.P.,

I usually clean just before the accuracy falls off. My .223 I can't hardly shoot enough in 1 day to get it to foul. Don't want to push my 22-250 past 100 rounds. 25-06 and 300 winmag is at 60 rounds. All with moly bullets. One of the guys is cleaning his factory 22-250 Sav. at 60 rounds, moly bullets.

I field clean with Bore Snakes and continue shooting. We give them a thorough cleaning at the end of each days shooting. Warm or cold I can't tell the difference.

Bore snakes are great for use in the field. I found they pull through easier when the bore is warm as opposed to a cold bore. Have not tried cleaning with them when the gun is hot.

I too do a thorough cleaning after getting home, but have found running the boresnake through a couple more times while still warm (5-6 times w/#9 or equiv) leaves the bore nearly as clean as with patches.

I'm with Flippy!

Bore Snake for sure!

I bought one for my Encore 204, because the dealer didn't have any 20 cal brushes! I can carry the Bore Snake with me while hunting! When I'm on the bench, I run it through the bore 3 times after each 5 or 6 shots!

I can see me getting one of these for each of my other calibers!

I'm with Chuck, I now have several of them, nearly one for every caliber. I was too cheap for years to buy them, now I wonder how much time I wasted cleaning with patches.

Plus you can curl them up and put them right in a pocket. No pieces to lose, either. Try that with a conventional cleaning rod...

OK thanks. I have several bore snakes myself. are you putting anything on it when running through or just using her dry? I discovered at the range yesterday that all accuracy disappears from my rifle if she gets too dirty. It happened after 75 rounds so I guess that it would make sense to clean after 50 rounds since I carry 50 round boxes.

I use a little Hoppes #9 (or your fav) right at the point where the small cord is attachted to the "flossy" part. Put it on the bigger, fat stuff, before the brush.

Seems to work very well, and it has the right smell, too...
