I am an inexperienced coyote hunter (OK, I have never actually shot a coyote!). I have a very accurate load worked up for my .223 Rem that uses the 50gr Hornady Vmax bullet. This bullet is explosive on gophers, but I wonder if it might be too light and frangible for coyotes. Is this bullet a good choice for coyotes?

Vmax work perfectly well out of my 22-250 on foxs. But as is often said proper bullet placement is the key to success. Happy hunting !

That's my favorite ground squirrel and prairie dog bullet and I have taken the occasional coyote with it and haven't had a problem yet. It's not my first choice when I go out for coyotes but if I'm out hunting varmints and stumble across one I don't hesitate to use it at all. I have killed almost 100 foxes with the 50v-max over the past two or three years. Absolutely no trouble, and usually get an exit unless the shoulder is hit on entry - won't always get an exit under these conditions. This is at .222rem velocity. Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Last winter I hit a big Yote at just over 300 yards with a 50gr Vmax and it dropped in its tracks. The shot ended up being a little far back not in the chest cavity but still put him down sharp. That was from my 220 Swift. It's the only hunting bullet I shoot in two .223rem's one 22-250 an my Swift, Love it. --------------------------------- It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it
