GHD and I went out this afternoon to our "honeyhole" place and wound up with fog and drizzle. The groundhogs were out, though, and we got 7 each for a total of 216 on that farm for this year! GHD is up to 97 and I am up to 234 for the season. I am just one short of my all-time record of 235 set way back in 1994 when the only rifle I had was my SS BDL 700 in .223. I got one today that weighed 14.5#. We got several over 300 yds with 22-250's; I had one @ 350 in the rain. The Leica 1200 wouldn't range much over 300 yards in these nasty conditions! Hopefully GHD will have his computer back in business soon...

How far will that Leica resolve a groundhog sized target when weather conditions are good? I've wondered about getting one of those to try on prairie dogs ( I know 'hogs are bigger).


P.S. Holy crap! 14.5 pounds! What a monster. Are you going to have that one stuffed and mounted?

Slowpoke Slim, Sorry to say, but the 14.5# groundhog met the same fate as his bretheren- feeding the raptor and vulture population- we try to do our part, you know. The Leica 1200 is the best rangefinder I've ever used, and I've used several. On a clear day it will not only range ground hog size targets, it will range against just about anything! Most of the time it will range against the ground itself, especially if it is a little bit rolling. I've even gotten readings out to 400 or 500 yards on perfectly flat ground- something the Bushnell rangefinder couldn't come close to doing. It will range a lot of stuff right up to its 1200 yd max, especially with a fresh battery. One of my best investments, for sure. Plus,there is a pocket in the dash of a Super-Duty Ford that it f fits into like it was custom-made for it!

I'd have loved to have been there-- just to spot 'em for you.

The Nikon Monarch Gold 1200 works at the same level as the Leica does. Chuckmusher and I have compared them on the same groundhogs many times. Usually right on or within 2 yards of the same reading.
Speaking of the rainy day shoot, my last target was one Chuckmusher spotted at about 175 yards...........absolutely nothing but a side of a head shot. It was foggy enough that the sight picture was a little hazy! A 25 grain VMAX from the 17 "Furbie" made a very pleasant "THWACK" as it entered just under the ear! DRT!! Gotta love the 17 Fireball!
