What is your top-end range for varmints(coyotes, chucks, prairie dogs, etc)?

HMMMMM I think the question schould be what distance are you moast comfortable shooting at some who have experance at long rang will be a lot different than say someone that moastly hunts at 100 to 200 yards and what is long range to me may not even be thought of as right by others this is one of those moral questions that keep's creeping up and judging others by another persons limit's rather it being self imposed or your abilty in my mind if you can make the shot and make a clean kill it really does not matter if it is 50 yards or a country mile if we are taking about rifles some will hit at 700 yards with a 22-250 moast of the time while others will not shoot over a 100 with a 300 win mag this was not ment to cause a flame war or to get everyone fired up as to what is the right range just my 2 cents: Coyote Slayer

As long as I can get a good sight picture in the scope and the shot is safe, I'll go for it.

Nebraska,

That is a very difficult question to answer, not only do different shooters effect this max range, but different calibers and rifles/handguns do as well. Here is a short list of my current favorite varmint rounds and the range I use them at:

Rifles:
22 Hornet(M77/22H)
35 gr V-Max @ 3100 fps 0-200 yards(225 max)

17 Rem(M700 Classic)
20 gr V-Max @ 4100 fps 0-300 yards(350 max)

223 Rem(Howa M1500)
55 gr V-Max @ 3400 fps 0-350 yards(400 max)

22-250 Rem(M77VT)
50 gr B.S.Tip @ 3920 fps 0-450 yards(500 max)

220 Swift(M77VT)
55 gr V-Max @ 3900 fps 0-450 yards(500 max)

6mm-284(custom M70)
107 gr Matchking @ 3500 fps 400-1200 yards

25-06 Rem(M77MkII)
100gr B.Tip @ 3440 fps 300-600 yards

50 BMG(LAR Match)
750 gr A-Max @ 2750 fps 800-2000 yards

Handguns:
221 Fireball(XP-100)
40 gr V-Max @ 3050 fps 0-200 yards(225 max)

223 Rem(XP-100)
40 gr B.S.Tip @ 3300 fps 0-250 yards(300 max)

7mm-08(Encore)
110 gr TNT @ 2850 fps 200-500 yards

270 Win(Encore)
130 gr B. Tip @ 2700 fps 200-500 yards

7.21 Tomahawk(Custom Encore)
150 gr B. Tip @ 2750 fps 400-700 yards

As you can see, there is alot of differnce between different rounds and firearms. in fact many of my rifles and handguns are either limited to shorter range or longer range because of the optics in the rings. One example is my 6mm-284. It will work very well at close range but because of the 18 lb rifle set up and optic set up it is not the best choice for under 400 yard shooting. All in all, if I can see a varmint target in the scope and if it is in a safe shooting area, I'll throw a slug at it, especially with the 50 BMG.

This is a very vauge answer but it give some idea of the difficulty in answering the question.

Give a specific round and rifle set up and I could give a more defined answer for you.

Good Shooting!!!

I was just wondering what kind of response that question would invoke. I'm glad to see folks still taking responsibility for their shot even though there's a varmint on the other end instead of a game animal. My limits also vary by the gun I'm using and are probably pretty short by most standards due to my ability. For example, my max with a 22-250 is 350 yards right now. To me, that is a very long shot.
